Where is Cleveland?
Cleveland is found in the northwestern part of Emery County. It sits in a low area of land between mountains and the desert. It is about 7 miles (11 km) east of Huntington. The town is also 18 miles (29 km) south of Price. Castle Dale, the main city in Emery County, is about 16 miles (26 km) northeast of Cleveland. The town covers an area of about 0.86 square miles (2.2 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
Cleveland's Story: A Look Back
Cleveland was first settled in 1884 by two men named Samuel Nelson Alger and Henry Sr. They started by claiming land to farm, which is called homesteading. Soon after, about 25 families joined them. These early settlers worked hard to build the town. Cleveland was named after Grover Cleveland, who was the President of the United States in the 1880s.
The first settlers came to Cleveland because they heard good things about the land. They found plenty of grass and good places to start farms. People said that the farms in Cleveland needed less water than other farms in Emery County. This made the ground very productive for growing crops.

Schools in Cleveland
In 1890, the first school was a log cabin with simple plank benches. By 1893, it was too small, so a new wooden building was built. Later, a two-story part was added. A school made of adobe bricks was built in 1912. Teachers like Harry B. Mortensen and C. Leslie Bennett helped start fun programs. These included sports, music, and speech for students. A new school was built in 1976 and then updated in 1989.
Fun Times in Cleveland
The people of Cleveland loved to have social gatherings and parties. When missionaries or people serving in the military left, it was a special reason for a get-together. In April 1910, a large opera house was built by Ernest E. Davis. Many dances and weddings were held there. In 1923, a machine was installed to show silent movies. A player piano played music along with the movies. By 1928, a projector that could play "talking movies" was installed. A roller skating rink was also added in 1937. These old buildings are not there today.
