Cleveland Winslow (born May 26, 1836 – died July 7, 1864) was an officer in the United States Army. He served during the American Civil War with the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry. This unit was also known as the famous Duryee's Zouaves. They were known for their colorful uniforms and unique fighting style.

Winslow was a brave leader on the battlefield. He was also known for being very strict with his soldiers. In 1863, he helped during the New York Draft Riots.

Early Life and Military Start

Cleveland Winslow was born in Medford, Massachusetts. He was the oldest son of Reverend Dr. Gordon Winslow. Before the Civil War began in 1861, he was part of the New York State Militia.

When the war started, he joined the Union Army. His father, Gordon Winslow, also joined the 5th Infantry as a chaplain. His younger brother, Gordon Winslow, Jr., joined the unit later as a lieutenant.

Serving in the Civil War

First Battles

Winslow started his service as a Captain in the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry. He commanded Company K and Company E. Later, he took command of the entire regiment. This happened just before the Second Battle of Bull Run.

He also led his regiment during the Seven Days Battles and at the Battle of Antietam. In these battles, his regiment was mostly kept in reserve. They took part in only a few small fights. Winslow quickly moved up in rank. He became a Major on September 24, 1862. Then, he was promoted to Colonel on December 4, 1862.

New York City Draft Riots

In May 1863, Winslow returned to New York. The original 5th New York regiment finished its two-year service. Winslow then helped reorganize the 5th New York Infantry. It became a veteran battalion on May 25.

Soon after, he was called to New York City. His mission was to help stop the New York City draft riots. These riots happened the following month. Winslow led a small group of 50 men from his regiment. He also had 200 volunteers and two cannons. His forces faced a very large crowd of rioters. Despite their efforts, they had to retreat.

Cold Harbor and His Death

After several months, Winslow and his battalion were stationed in Alexandria, Virginia. They were assigned to the V Corps. This corps was part of the Army of the Potomac. Winslow led the New York 5th Infantry in its last campaign. This was at the Battle of Chancellorsville.

During the Battle of Cold Harbor, Winslow was badly wounded. He was hit in the shoulder on June 2, 1864. This happened while he was rallying his soldiers at Bethesda Church. His father, Gordon Winslow, was with him at this time. Winslow was taken back to Alexandria on a hospital ship. He sadly died from his wounds on July 7, 1864, at Mansion House hospital.

Winslow is shown in the 2007 movie Red Legged Devils. He is played by Stan McGee.
