Cliff Mountain is a special part of the famous Adirondack Mountains in New York. It's known for being one of the "High Peaks." Even though it's not the tallest, it has an interesting history. People love to explore this area for its natural beauty.

Where is Cliff Mountain?

This mountain is located in Essex County. It sits between the towns of Newcomb and Keene. Cliff Mountain is part of the Marcy Group. This group is a section of the larger Great Range of mountains.

Water and Rivers Around Cliff Mountain

Cliff Mountain is important for the water that flows from it. Its slopes feed into the watershed of the Opalescent River. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into one main river or lake. The Opalescent River is a smaller river, also called a tributary. It flows into the mighty Hudson River. The Hudson River then makes its way to New York Bay.

The northern and western sides of Cliff Mountain send their water directly into the Opalescent River. Water from the southeast side flows into a stream called Upper Twin Brook. This brook then joins the Opalescent River.

A Special Mountain: The High Peaks

Cliff Mountain is part of a famous list called the Adirondack High Peaks. This list includes 46 mountains in the Adirondacks. To be on the list, mountains were thought to be over 4,000 feet (about 1,219 meters) tall.

In 1897, a survey of the Adirondacks measured Cliff Mountain. It was believed to be over 4,000 feet high. So, it was added to the list of High Peaks. However, a newer survey in 1953 used more modern tools. This survey found that Cliff Mountain and three other peaks were actually a bit shorter. But the list of 46 High Peaks has stayed the same! This means Cliff Mountain is still considered one of the special High Peaks.

Exploring the Area

Cliff Mountain is located inside the High Peaks Wilderness Area. This area is part of Adirondack State Park. A wilderness area means it's kept very natural and wild. There are no marked trails that lead right to the top of Cliff Mountain. This makes it a more challenging adventure for experienced hikers.
