Clive Selsby Revill (born 18 April 1930 – died 11 March 2025) was an actor from New Zealand. He was best known for his amazing performances in musical theatre and on the London stage.

Clive Revill was a skilled actor who worked with the famous Royal Shakespeare Company. He also appeared in many films and television shows, often playing interesting and unique characters. He was nominated for two important acting awards called Tony Awards. These were for his roles in the musicals Irma La Douce and Oliver!. He also received a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for his role in the movie Avanti! (1972).

One of his most famous roles was voicing the Emperor in the first movie version of The Empire Strikes Back (1980).

Starting on Stage

Clive Revill first trained to be an accountant in New Zealand. But he decided to become an actor instead in 1950. His very first stage role was as Sebastian in the play Twelfth Night.

In 1950, he moved to London to study acting at the Old Vic Theatre. He joined The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company from 1956 to 1958. There, he acted in famous plays like Hamlet, Love's Labour's Lost, The Merchant of Venice, Julius Caesar, and The Tempest.

He played many different characters on stage. These included Bob in Irma la Douce, Ratty in Toad of Toad Hall, and Jean-Paul Marat in Marat/Sade.

Broadway Shows

Clive Revill made his first appearance on Broadway in New York in 1952. He played Sam Weller in The Pickwick Papers. Later, he starred in Irma La Douce, The Incomparable Max, and Oliver!. His role as Fagin in Oliver! earned him a Tony Award nomination.

He was also well-known for his roles in the operettas by Gilbert and Sullivan, both on stage and TV. He was part of the first national tour of the musical Drood.

Movies and Films

Clive Revill had red hair and a unique face, which often led him to play funny and unusual characters in British films. Some of these movies from the 1960s and 1970s include Kaleidoscope (1966), Modesty Blaise (1966), The Double Man (1967), Fathom (1967), The Assassination Bureau (1969), The Black Windmill (1974), and One of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing (1975).

He also had important supporting roles. He appeared in Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965) with Laurence Olivier. His first American film was A Fine Madness (1966). He even had a main role in the horror movie The Legend of Hell House (1973).

Clive Revill often played funny characters from other countries. He acted as characters from China to Russia. Two of his most famous roles were in movies by Billy Wilder: The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) and Avanti! (1972). For Avanti!, he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for playing the hotel manager Carlo Carlucci.

Television Roles

In the 1978 TV miniseries Centennial, he played a Scottish accountant named Finlay Perkin. He also starred in two Gilbert and Sullivan productions for TV in 1983: Ko-Ko in The Mikado and John Wellington Wells in The Sorcerer.

After moving to the United States, he appeared as a guest star in many TV shows. These include Columbo (1978), Hart to Hart, Dynasty, Magnum, P.I., The Love Boat, Remington Steele, Murder, She Wrote, Babylon 5, MacGyver, and Star Trek: The Next Generation. He played the wizard Vector in the series Wizards and Warriors.

Voice Acting Work

Clive Revill was very good at doing different accents. He was also known for his voice work in animated movies and TV shows. He voiced Alfred Pennyworth in the first three episodes of Batman: The Animated Series. He was the voice of Chico in Chico the Rainmaker (1974).

One of his most famous voice roles was Emperor Palpatine in the original 1980 version of The Empire Strikes Back. Later, his voice was replaced by Ian McDiarmid in the 2004 DVD version to match the other Star Wars movies. However, Clive Revill is still given credit for his original work.

He also lent his voice to cartoons like The Transformers and DuckTales. He voiced characters in video games too, such as Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and Conquest: Frontier Wars.

Later Life and Passing

Clive Revill passed away on 11 March 2025, at the age of 94. He died from problems related to dementia at a nursing home in Sherman Oaks.
