History of Colchester
Colchester was officially created in 1792. It was formed from a part of another town called Middletown. The town got its name from Colchester, Connecticut, a city in a nearby state.

The southern border of Colchester is also the border of Sullivan County.
The town covers a total area of about 142 square miles (368.2 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 136.8 square miles (354.3 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 5.4 square miles (14.0 square kilometers), is water.

Colchester is home to several small communities and interesting locations:
- Agloe – This is a fictional place that was created as a "copyright trap" on maps. It later inspired a popular book called Paper Towns.
- Butternut Grove – A small community located northwest of Cooks Falls.
- Cooks Falls – Another small community, found southeast of Butternut Grove.
- Corbett – A community located north of Horton.
- Downsville – This is a larger community in the town. It used to be a village.
- Little Spring Brook – A small community on the eastern side of Colchester. It is about 5 miles (8 km) north of Roscoe. It is also 5 miles (8 km) south of the Pepacton Reservoir. This area is a gateway to over 1,000 acres (4 square kilometers) of state-owned land. This land is used for hunting, snowmobiling, and hiking.
- Gregorytown – A community located southwest of Corbett.
- Horton – A community located northwest of Butternut Grove.
- Pepacton Reservoir – This large reservoir is part of the water system that supplies drinking water to New York City.
- Shinhopple – A community located northwest of Horton.
