Coldspring is a small town in Cattaraugus County, New York. It is located in the southwestern part of the county. In 2020, about 661 people lived there. Coldspring is west of the city of Salamanca.

History of Coldspring

The first settlers arrived in Coldspring around 1818. The town of Coldspring was officially created in 1837. It was formed from a part of the town of Napoli. Later, in 1847 and 1848, some land was added to the town of South Valley.

The Story of Elko

In 1965, the town of Coldspring voted to take over a former town called Elko. Elko was also known as Quaker Bridge. It had to be moved because its land was flooded to create the Allegheny Reservoir. Elko had been formed in 1890 from part of South Valley.

Quakers were among the first people to settle in Elko. They came in 1798 to help the local Seneca people. A Seneca leader named Cornplanter had invited them. Today, almost all of Elko's original land is either under the reservoir or inside Allegany State Park. Because of this, no one lives in Elko permanently anymore. When Elko joined Coldspring, many of its former residents moved to Coldspring. This helped the town's population grow.
