Randolph is a small town located in Cattaraugus County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 2,470 people lived there. The town got its name from another town called Randolph in Vermont.

The town of Randolph includes a former village also named Randolph. It also covers most of what used to be the village of East Randolph. A small part of East Randolph is now in the town of Conewango. Randolph is on the western edge of Cattaraugus County. It's located roughly halfway between the cities of Salamanca and Jamestown.

History of Randolph

The land where Randolph is located was originally part of a huge area owned by the Holland Land Company. People first started settling here around the year 1820. The very first settler was Edmund Fuller. He came from Oneida County in 1820 and built a simple log cabin.

Town Formation and Changes

The town of Randolph was officially created in 1826. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Conewango. On March 7, 1826, the citizens had their first annual meeting. They gathered to choose their town supervisor and other important officials. Later, in 1847, the town was divided. This division helped create the new town of South Valley.

Village Incorporations and Dissolutions

In 1867, the community of Randolph became an official village. This meant it had its own local government. The village of East Randolph was also incorporated in 1881. However, in 2010, the people living in both villages voted to change things. They decided to end their village status. This change happened in 2011. As a result, both Randolph and East Randolph went back to being hamlets within the larger town. Part of East Randolph even rejoined the town of Conewango.
