Conewango is a small town located in Cattaraugus County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,794 people lived here. The town gets its name from Conewango Creek, a stream that flows right through it. You can find Conewango on the western edge of Cattaraugus County, a bit northeast of a larger city called Jamestown.

A Look Back: Conewango's History

The name "Conewango" comes from a native language and means "walking slowly." This probably describes the gentle flow of the Conewango Creek. People first started settling in this area around 1816. The Town of Conewango was officially created in 1823. It was formed from a part of another town called Little Valley. Later, parts of Conewango were used to create other towns. In 1826, the town of Randolph was formed, and in 1832, the town of Leon was created from Conewango's land.

The western border of Conewango is also the border of Chautauqua County. The Conewango Creek flows through the town and exits near its southwest corner.
