How the Separatists Started
The Confederacy of Independent Systems first appeared in the movie Attack of the Clones. This movement gained support from thousands of star systems. The Galactic Republic worried that a big war would start.
Count Dooku and other Separatist leaders prepared for war. Nute Gunray, who led the Trade Federation, gave many battle droids to the Separatist army. Other leaders, like Poggle the Lesser and San Hill, also gave money and droids.
On the planet Geonosis, Count Dooku met with leaders of powerful companies. Count Dooku made them an offer, and the Confederacy of Independent Systems was officially formed. The Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi secretly heard this meeting. He sent a warning to the Republic.
The Republic then sent a new army of clone troopers to fight the battle droids. This battle on Geonosis started the long conflict known as the Clone Wars. Poggle the Lesser gave plans for a new weapon to Count Dooku. Count Dooku then left Geonosis for Coruscant. He gave the plans to Darth Sidious and told him the war had begun.
The Clone Wars Conflict
During the Clone Wars, fighting between the Republic and the Separatists continued. Jedi Knights were sent to help the clone armies. The droid armies tried to control more planets. For three years, battles took place all over the galaxy.
The Separatists gained new allies during this time. After Jango Fett died on Geonosis, a new bounty hunter named Durge joined the Separatists. Count Dooku also found a woman named Asajj Ventress. She was very strong in the Force. Asajj Ventress became a powerful commander in the Separatist army.
A new major leader for the Separatists also appeared. This was General Grievous, who was part droid and part alien. Count Dooku trained him in lightsaber combat. General Grievous became feared by Jedi across the galaxy. One of his most daring attacks was on Coruscant. He led a large fleet to capture Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.
The End of the Separatists
Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was taken from Coruscant to a starship called The Invisible Hand. The Battle of Coruscant was fought both on the ground and in space. Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker got onto The Invisible Hand to rescue Palpatine. During this rescue, Anakin killed Count Dooku.
General Grievous escaped, and the Separatist forces were defeated in that battle. General Grievous then became the main leader of the CIS. He went to Utapau to talk to the business leaders. Darth Sidious told Grievous to move these leaders to Mustafar.
Droid armies attacked planets like Kashyyyk and Utapau. Obi-Wan Kenobi found and killed General Grievous on Utapau. After Count Dooku and General Grievous died, Nute Gunray became the leader.
The new Sith apprentice, Darth Vader, was sent to Mustafar. His job was to kill all the Separatist leaders there. After he finished this task, all droid forces stopped fighting. This marked the end of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. It also marked the beginning of the powerful Galactic Empire.
