Nute Gunray facts for kids

Nute Gunray is a fictional character from the amazing world of Star Wars. He was a Neimoidian, a type of alien, and a very important politician. Nute Gunray was the leader, or Viceroy, of the Trade Federation. This group caused a lot of trouble by invading the planet Naboo. Later, he became a big leader for the Separatists during the huge war called the Clone Wars.

You can see Nute Gunray in the Star Wars movies: Episode I, Episode II, and Episode III. He also appears in the animated TV show, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

The Invasion of Naboo

The invasion of Naboo happened about 32 years before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. It all started with a blockade around the planet. Nute Gunray was in charge of the ships blocking Naboo. This blockade was supposedly a protest against new taxes on trade routes.

However, the real reason was much darker. The secret plan was to invade Naboo with an army of droids. This was all controlled by Senator Palpatine, who was secretly the evil Sith Lord Darth Sidious. He wanted to make the Galactic Senate feel sorry for Naboo, so he could gain more power. After the blockade was set up, the Trade Federation sent many Battle Droids down to the planet. You can see all of this happen in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Failed Negotiations

The Republic sent two Jedi, Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his student Obi-Wan Kenobi, to talk with Nute Gunray. Gunray thought they were there to force him to make a deal. After talking to Darth Sidious, Gunray ordered his droids to kill the Jedi.

But the Jedi were too skilled! They managed to escape the droids and landed on Naboo. There, they saw the invasion happening up close. Later, Nute Gunray himself went down to Naboo. He tried to force the planet's young queen, Padmé Amidala, into signing a bad agreement. Luckily, he was stopped before he could succeed.

Nute Gunray and the Senate

Nute Gunray often claimed that everything he did was legal. He said he would never do anything without the Senate's approval. When he said this, he was talking about the trade blockade, not the actual invasion.

If there was clear proof that the Trade Federation had invaded Naboo, the Republic would have stepped in. But the Senate was hard to convince. Gunray and the Trade Federation had many friends and connections in the Senate. They were even accused of causing delays and problems on purpose.

Working for the Sith

Nute Gunray was directly controlled by the evil Sith Lord Darth Sidious. This was the secret identity of Senator Palpatine. Sidious ordered Gunray to invade Naboo. By creating this fake conflict, Palpatine hoped to get sympathy for Naboo in the Senate. He used this sympathy, along with the Republic's slow response, to become the Supreme Chancellor.

Nute Gunray was just a small piece in Palpatine's big plan to gain power. Gunray didn't know he was being used this way. Even so, Palpatine became Supreme Chancellor, and he couldn't have done it without Nute Gunray's actions.

Nute Gunray didn't really like working for the Sith. When Darth Sidious showed Darth Maul to Gunray using a hologram, Gunray was not happy. After the call ended, he famously said, "This is getting out of hand, now there are two of them!" He was talking about the two Sith Lords. Gunray likely feared the Sith because of their great power. He worried they could threaten his position and control him too much.

Nute Gunray also knew the Sith Lord Darth Tyrannus. Dooku was Sidious's second student and played a big part in the Separatist rebellion, just like Gunray. They were even seen together on the planet Geonosis.

Becoming a Separatist

After the conflict on Naboo, Nute Gunray joined with other powerful groups. These included parts of the Trade Federation, the Banking Clan, and the Techno Union. Together, they formed the Confederacy of Independent Systems (C.I.S.). This group became the main enemy of the Republic during the huge war known as The Clone Wars.

Separatist Council

Nute Gunray was the chairman, or leader, of the Separatist Council. He sat on this council with other important figures. These included Count Dooku, Passel Argente from the Corporate Alliance, San Hill from the InterGalactic Banking Clan, Shu Mai from the Commerce Guild, Wat Tambor from the Techno Union, Poggle the Lesser from Geonosis, and Senators Po Nudo and Tikkes.

His End

Nute Gunray was killed by Darth Vader. This happened on the planet Mustafar, under the orders of Vader's new master, Darth Sidious. Sidious had told the Separatist council to move to Mustafar, promising them that the war would soon be over. But it was a trick to get rid of them.
