Crackenthorpe is a small village in Cumbria, England. It is part of the Eden District, a beautiful area known for its countryside. The village is located about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) southeast of the town of Penrith.
About Crackenthorpe Village
Crackenthorpe is a very small place. In 2001, its population was less than 100 people. Because it's so small, its population details are often included with the nearby parish of Long Marton. The village used to have the main A66 road passing right through it. However, a bypass was built, which means traffic now goes around Crackenthorpe. This has made the village a much quieter place to live.
Crackenthorpe Hall: A Historic Home
One of the most important buildings in Crackenthorpe is Crackenthorpe Hall. This is a large, historic house that has been around for a long time. It was first rebuilt in the early 1600s. Later, around 1685, it was changed and improved by Hugh and Thomas Machell.
Crackenthorpe Hall is considered a "Grade II listed" building. This means it's an important historic building that needs to be protected. Today, the large hall has been divided into several smaller homes. For many years, people believed the hall was haunted by a ghost named Peg Sneddle, who was sometimes called the "grey lady of Crackenthorpe."
