History of Crescent City
Crescent City has a long and interesting past! It was first settled by non-native people in 1852. Back then, it was called "Old Oliver Plantation." Later, in 1876, the area was officially mapped out and named "Crescent City."
The city officially became a municipality (a self-governing town) in 1883. Then, just two years later, in 1885, it was formally recognized as the City of Crescent City.
A very important person, A. Philip Randolph, was born in Crescent City in 1889. He was the founder of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. This group was a powerful union for Black railway workers. Randolph became a major leader in the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s and 1960s. He fought for equal rights for all people. There's even a street in Crescent City named Randolph Street in his honor!
Crescent City also has two places listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Hubbard House and the Crescent City Historic District. These places help preserve the city's history.
Did you know that Eagle's Nest Grove in Crescent City is Florida's oldest continuous organic citrus grove? That means they've been growing citrus fruits there naturally for a very long time!
