About DJ.Fresh
Early Life and Music Start
Marqus Brown was born and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. When he was a kid in Baltimore, he loved hip hop culture. He started mixing music on turntables when he was only nine years old! He enjoyed listening to soul music, hip hop, and jazz from the 1970s and 1980s. Some of his favorite artists were Anita Baker and Whitney Houston.
When he was nine, he moved with his family to the San Francisco Bay Area in California. There, he and his friends would perform and compete in DJ battles.
Becoming a Music Star
DJ.Fresh got his first big chance when he was 18. He was the DJ for a show in San Francisco with the rapper Common. Soon after, he went on two tours as a DJ for the famous rapper Nas.
He also started making his own music. He created beats using turntables and a digital audio workstation. In 1999, he was named the 3rd best DJ in the U.S. by the ITF (International Turntablist Federation).
At first, he used the name DJ Fresh. But to avoid confusion with another producer named DJ Fresh, he changed his name to The World's Freshest. Later, he started writing it as DJ.Fresh.
The Tonite Show Series
In 2005, DJ.Fresh began his special album series called "The Tonite Show." For this series, he produces entire albums with different guest artists. Some of the artists he has worked with include Freddie Gibbs, E-40, and Raekwon.
His 2014 "Tonite Show" album with Trae Tha Truth got good reviews. People said it showed they were becoming a great team.
Producing for Other Artists
In 2006, DJ.Fresh started producing music for many big artists. He worked on albums for J. Stalin, Shady Nate, and Mitchy Slick. He was even named the Best West Coast Producer in 2009–2010.
His album Miracle & Nightmare On 10th Street with J. Stalin came out in 2013. This double album was very successful! It reached #61 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
In 2013, he also released the album Feet Match the Paint with Mitchy Slick. The next year, he put out his Boomin' System Mixtape. This mixtape featured famous artists like Scarface and Kendrick Lamar. People liked how varied and surprising the music styles were on the mixtape.
DJ.Fresh's Music Style
DJ.Fresh mixes many different styles in his music. He uses hip hop, EDM, house, jazz, and R&B. He says he feels more like an R&B producer than a hip hop producer.
He uses old-school equipment like turntables and vinyl records. He also uses modern tools like a MIDI controller keyboard and Ableton Live software. Sometimes, he even includes live instruments in his songs.
