Exploring the Mountain

The Dartmouth Skiway reaches a top elevation of 1,943 feet (592 m) above sea level. The bottom of the mountain is at 975 feet (297 m). This means you get a vertical drop of 968 feet (295 m) when you ski down! The longest trail here is 1.25 miles (2.0 km) long.
Lifts and Snow
There are three lifts to take you up the mountain. These include the Winslow Mountain Quad, the Holt's Ledge Double, and the Magic Carpet Beginner Lift. Together, these lifts can carry 3,300 skiers up the mountain every hour.
About seventy percent of the ski area has snowmaking equipment. This means they can make snow with over fifteen snowguns. There is also a cool terrain park on the Winslow side for tricks and jumps.
Ski School and Patrol
The Dartmouth Skiway Ski and Snowboard School has more than 35 instructors. They are ready to help you learn or improve your skills. The slopes are kept safe by the Dartmouth Ski Patrol. This group is made up of volunteers from the community and students. They provide first aid if anyone gets hurt.
The Dartmouth College Ski Team also uses the Skiway. They host their alpine skiing events here every year for the Dartmouth Winter Carnival. It's a big event with lots of fun!
A Look at History
The Dartmouth Skiway opened in 1957. Before that, there was a smaller ski area on Oak Hill in Hanover. When the Skiway first opened, it had a Pomalift on one peak. For the 1960–61 season, a T-bar was added for beginners. In 1968, a new section of trails opened. This new area had a double chairlift and was located across the street on Winslow Ledge.
Modern Improvements
The 1970s and 1980s brought many upgrades to the Skiway. The old Pomalift was replaced with a new Hall double chairlift. They also installed snowmaking equipment to ensure good snow conditions. In the next ten years, even more improvements were made. A CTEC quad chairlift was added, which can carry more skiers faster. A brand new McLane Family Lodge was also built. This lodge replaced the older one and offers a comfortable place to relax.
Like many other ski resorts in New England, the Dartmouth Skiway also hosts events. They hold different functions and gatherings even when it's not ski season.
The Dartmouth Skiway has hosted the NCAA Skiing Championships twice. These big college skiing competitions were held here in 1958 and 2003.
