Darya Pishchalnikova's Athletics Career
Darya Pishchalnikova started her athletics journey as a young talent. She won a silver medal in discus at the 2001 World Youth Championships in Athletics. She achieved this same success at the World Junior Championships in 2004.
Early Success and Personal Best
In 2006, Darya became one of the top discus throwers. She won the gold medal at the 2006 European Athletics Championships. Her throw was 65.55 meters, which was her best personal record at that time.
Challenges and Return to Competition
Darya won a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in Osaka. Her throw was 65.78 meters. However, this result was later cancelled due to rule violations. She was chosen to represent Russia at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. But she was not allowed to compete because of issues with sports rules. In October 2008, it was announced that Darya was one of several Russian athletes who faced a two-year ban. This was for not following rules about fair play in sports.
She returned to competition in 2011. She finished eleventh at the World Championships in Daegu that year. In 2012, she placed second at the 2012 European Cup Winter Throwing. She then achieved a new personal best throw of 67.00 meters in May. She also came in second at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting. Darya won the Russian Championships with an impressive throw of 70.69 meters. This was the best performance in the event since 1992.
Olympic Participation and Disqualification
Darya Pishchalnikova competed in the 2012 Olympics in London. She was initially awarded a silver medal. However, she later tested positive for a substance not allowed in sports. This test was from samples taken in May 2012. In April 2013, the Russian Athletics Federation banned her from competing for ten years. All her results from May 2012 onwards were cancelled. This meant she lost her Olympic medal.
