Her Sports Journey
Rising Through the Ranks
Darya started her sports journey as a young athlete. She quickly showed great skill in the discus throw. In 2001, she won a silver medal at the 2001 World Youth Championships in Athletics. She earned another silver medal at the World Junior Championships in 2004.
In 2006, Darya became one of the best women's discus throwers. She won the gold medal at the 2006 European Athletics Championships. Her throw of 65.55 meters was her personal best at that time.
Challenges and Comebacks
Darya continued to perform well. She won a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships in Japan. Her throw was 65.78 meters. However, this result was later cancelled.
She was chosen to represent Russia at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. But in July 2008, she was stopped from competing. This happened because of problems with her drug tests. Later, it was announced that Darya and several other Russian athletes received a two-year ban. This was for issues with their samples.
Darya returned to competition in 2011. She finished eleventh at the World Championships that year. In 2012, she threw a new personal best of 67.00 meters. She also won the Russian Championships with an amazing throw of 70.69 meters. This was the best performance in the event since 1992.
Olympic Participation and Later Events
Darya competed in the 2012 Olympics in London. She was awarded a silver medal there. However, she later tested positive for a banned substance. This test was from samples taken in May 2012.
In April 2013, the Russian Athletics Federation banned her for ten years. All her results from May 2012 were cancelled. This meant she lost her Olympic medal. Darya also told the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) about problems in sports. She shared details about how some Russian athletes had to take part in certain programs. Her ban by the Russian Athletics Federation might have been because she spoke out.
