Davis Peak is an awesome mountain located in North Cascades National Park, in the state of Washington, USA. It sits just north of Gorge Lake and south of the rugged Picket Range.

Even though Davis Peak isn't the highest mountain in the North Cascades, it's super famous for its incredibly steep sides!

What Makes Davis Peak Special?

Its Super Steep Northeast Face

One of the most amazing things about Davis Peak is its huge Northeast Face. This side of the mountain drops an incredible 5,250 feet (about 1,600 meters) in just one horizontal mile (1.6 kilometers)!

This makes it one of the steepest vertical drops over a short distance in the entire contiguous United States (that's the main part of the USA, not including Alaska or Hawaii). The only other place with a similar drop is the North Face of Kinnerly Peak. Imagine how challenging that would be to climb!

How Davis Peak Got Its Name

Davis Peak wasn't always called that. It was originally known as Stetattle Peak. But in 1904, a group of climbers, including David Ledgerwood and Walter B. Reaburn, decided to rename it.

They chose to honor the Davis family, who were early settlers in the area. Around the year 1900, before there were any roads or trains, the Davis family ran a special place called a "roadhouse." This roadhouse was at the base of the peak, near where the town of Diablo is today. It was a welcoming spot for trappers, miners, and other travelers who were exploring the wild region.
