How the De Smet Range Got Its Name
The highest mountain in this range, Roche de Smet, was named by Iroquois people. These Iroquois were working in the fur trade industry a long time ago. They chose the name to honor Pierre-Jean De Smet. He was a Belgian missionary who worked with Indigenous peoples in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States during the 1840s.
