Deagon is a suburb located in the northern part of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It's about 18 kilometers (11 miles) north of Brisbane's city center. In 2021 census, Deagon was home to 3,773 people.

Exploring Deagon's Nature
Deagon is a mostly flat area. One of its borders is Cabbage Tree Creek. This creek is very important for the local environment.
Amazing Wetlands
The Boondall Wetlands are close to Deagon, just across Cabbage Tree Creek. These wetlands are a special home for many birds and animals. Some birds even travel all the way from the Arctic Circle to visit! The Boondall Wetlands have both fresh and saltwater areas.
Smaller wetlands nearby, like the Deagon Wetland, have only fresh water. The Deagon Wetland is a significant area of tea tree woodland. It covers about 50 hectares (124 acres). You might spot interesting birds here, like the striped honeyeater and the white-cheeked honeyeater.
A Look Back: Deagon's History
The land around Deagon has a rich Aboriginal history. The Jagera and Turrbal groups lived in the Brisbane area. The Turrbal people generally lived north of the Brisbane River. Both groups spoke similar languages.
You can find signs of Aboriginal life in the area. These include a bora ring (a special meeting place) at Nudgee Waterhole. There were also Aboriginal camps along the banks of Cabbage Tree Creek.
How Deagon Got Its Name
Deagon was named after its railway station. The station itself was named in 1887 after William Deagon. He was the Mayor of Sandgate from 1882 to 1884. William Deagon was a well-known person in the area. He owned the Sandgate Hotel, which was a stop for the famous Cobb & Co. coaches. Many places in Deagon, like Deagon Street, the racecourse, the railway station, and the Deagon Wetlands, are named after him.
Local Buildings and Churches
The Deagon Baptist Mission Church opened in 1918. It was built near the Deagon railway station. The Deagon Post Office started operating on June 18, 1947.
The current Sandgate Uniting Church building opened in 1994. It brought together church groups from Boondall, Brighton, Sandgate, and Shorncliffe. In 2012, the Sandgate Baptist church joined with the Geebung Baptist church. They formed a new church called Connect Baptist Church in Deagon.
Education in Deagon
Deagon does not have its own primary school. Students usually go to primary schools in nearby suburbs like Sandgate.
Sandgate District State High School
Sandgate District State High School is a high school for students in Years 7 to 12. It opened in 1959. When it was officially opened in 1961, the Minister of Education, Jack Pizzey, said it was one of Queensland's most beautiful schools. It even had a special man-made lake! Over the years, the school has added more buildings, including a performance hall, a library, and a modern sports hall. The school also has a special education program.

Deagon Racecourse
The Deagon Racecourse is a training facility for horse racing. While horse races stopped being held here in 1941, it's still a top-notch place for training racehorses.
Ching Chung Taoist Temple
The Evergreen Ching Chung Taoist Temple was built in Deagon in 1991. It's a beautiful temple with three main halls built according to Taoist beliefs. These are the Hall of Three Purities, the Hall of Three Masters, and the Hall of the Spiritual Garden. There's also a special hall for remembering ancestors.

It's easy to get to Deagon using Sandgate Road and the Gateway Motorway.
Public Transport
Deagon has a railway line with three train stations that residents can use: North Boondall, Deagon, and Sandgate. There are also many bus services. All public transport in Deagon, including school buses, is part of the Translink network.
