Deepin (Chinese: 深度操作系统; pinyin: Shēndù Cāozuò-xìtǒng) is a type of computer operating system. It was once known as Linux Deepin and Hiweed Linux. Deepin uses its own special look and feel called the Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE). This environment is built using a tool called Qt.
Most Deepin users are in China. However, the DDE is also available for many other popular Linux operating systems. The company that makes Deepin is called Deepin Technology. It is based in Wuhan, China, and is part of a larger company called UnionTech.

How Deepin Started
Deepin began in 2004 as an operating system named Hiweed Linux. In 2011, the team working on Deepin started a company. This company, Deepin Technology, helped support the system's growth. They also received money from investors that same year.
In 2015, Deepin Technology joined the Linux Foundation. This is a group that helps support the Linux operating system. In 2019, the company Huawei started selling laptops with Deepin already installed.
In 2020, a Chinese company called Loongson worked with UnionTech. They wanted to develop Deepin more. This was to help China rely less on other operating systems like Microsoft Windows. In 2022, Deepin added a new way to manage software called "linglong."
In 2024, Deepin added new features that use AI. These included AI tools for coding, photo editing, and search. They also added two AI chat assistants. One was for general questions, and the other helped with questions about Deepin itself.
In June 2024, Deepin joined a project called "Prosperity 2036." This project aims to make RISC-V computer chips and software a main type of technology by 2036.
Since August 2024, Deepin Version 23 has offered better support for different computer chips. It now works with ARM64 and RISC-V processors. This is in addition to the x86 and LoongArch chips it already supported.
What Deepin Includes
Deepin comes with both free and open-source programs and some paid or private ones. Examples include Google Chrome, Spotify, and Steam. It also has its own set of apps made by Deepin Technology. Other programs like WPS Office are also included.
Deepin Technology Co., Ltd. (Chinese: 武漢深之度科技有限公司) leads the development of Deepin. This company earns money by selling technical support and other services. Since January 1, 2020, Deepin Technology has been a part of UnionTech (Chinese: 统信软件).
Deepin usually aims to release new versions four times a year. However, releases can be delayed if the work is not finished. Many people praise Deepin for its nice look. But some have also worried about user privacy.
How Many People Use Deepin
Deepin reported that in December 2022, over 3 million people around the world used their operating system. It supported 33 different languages. Since 2008, when it was renamed "Deepin," it has been downloaded more than 80 million times.
Deepin Desktop Environment
Deepin has its own special look and feel called the Deepin Desktop Environment, or DDE. It is built using a programming tool called Qt. Deepin also has its own window manager called dde-kwin. One reviewer from TechRepublic called the DDE "the single most beautiful desktop on the market."
The DDE is also available in the software stores of other operating systems. For example, it was available on Fedora 30. Since 2019, DDE was also available on openSUSE Tumbleweed and Leap. However, openSUSE removed DDE on May 7, 2025. This was due to problems with how it was packaged and security concerns.
Some other operating systems, like UbuntuDDE and Manjaro Deepin, use the Deepin Desktop Environment. These are supported by their communities. You can also install DDE on Arch Linux.
