About Delroy Edwards

His Early Life

Delroy Edwards was born to actor Ron Perlman and jewelry designer Opal Stone Perlman. His father has Jewish family roots from Hungary and Poland. His mother is Afro-Jamaican. He has an older sister named Blake Amanda.

Growing up, Delroy heard many types of music. These included post-punk, industrial, funk, and R&B. He also went to "noise music" concerts. He listened to bands like New Order, Joy Division, and Depeche Mode.

His parents helped him start his music journey. They gave him his first drum kit. He learned to play jazz drumming in a classic way. His mother loved gangsta rap and dancehall music. She showed him underground hip hop and "cassette culture." This was about sharing music on tapes. A friend of his sister taught him about house music. This friend also showed him how to use a drum machine.

Delroy Edwards studied music for a short time at the California Institute of the Arts.

His Music Career

In 2010, Delroy Edwards moved to New York City. He worked at A1 Records with Ron Morelli. Ron Morelli later started the record label L.I.E.S.. Delroy released his first record, 4 Club Use Only, on this label in 2012. It was a 12-inch record.

He released several short music collections called EPs on the L.I.E.S. label. In 2013, he started his own record label, L.A. Club Resource. Delroy also released his Slowed Down Funk series of mixtapes for free. These mixes used a style called "chopped and screwed." This means the music is slowed down and has parts repeated.

In 2014, a record label called The Death of Rave released Teenage Tapes. This was a collection of experimental songs Delroy recorded in art school. In the same year, he started a techno music project called DJ Punisher.

In 2016, Delroy released a 30-song album called Hangin' at the Beach. This album came out on his L.A. Club Resource label. Many people thought it was his best album yet. His next album, Rio Grande, came out in 2018. That same year, he released Aftershock with the L.I.E.S. label. This was his first release with them since 2013. Delroy also worked with musician Dean Blunt on Desert Sessions. This album had experimental synthesizer songs.

In 2020, his album Slap Happy was released by L.I.E.S.

What Kind of Music Does He Make?

Delroy Edwards uses different music styles in his songs. These include house, techno, and hip hop. He also uses sounds from noise, hardcore, and old American garage rock.

His music often has a "lo-fi" sound. This means it sounds a bit raw or like it was recorded on older equipment. You might hear "tape hiss," which is a soft background noise from old tape recordings.

Music experts say Delroy combines an "80s vibe" with sounds that make people want to dance. His music is often called "outsider house." This is a type of house music that sounds a bit rough and unique.

His Slowed Down Funk mixtapes were inspired by DJ Screw. They featured slowed-down Southern rap and 80s R&B songs. His album Hangin' at the Beach had fast electronic drums and basslines like new wave music.

Delroy's style is also influenced by classic Chicago house music and old rap sounds.
