Dermot Patrick Mulroney (born October 31, 1963) is an American actor and musician. He is famous for acting in many different types of movies. These include romantic comedies, westerns, and dramas.
Mulroney started his movie career in 1988 with the film Sunset. He became well-known for his roles in Young Guns (1988) and Career Opportunities (1991). One of his most successful movies was My Best Friend's Wedding (1997).
Throughout his career, he has appeared in many popular films. Some of these are About Schmidt (2002), The Wedding Date (2005), and Zodiac (2007). He also acted in Jobs (2013) and the horror movie Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015).
Mulroney has also worked in television. He had main roles in the TV series Crisis (2014) and Pure Genius (2016–2017). More recently, he appeared in the Amazon Prime Video series Hanna and the Disney+ series Secret Invasion (2023). In 2023, he also starred in the horror movie Scream VI.
Besides acting, Mulroney is a talented cellist. He has played the cello for the music in several major films. These include Jurassic World (2015), Rogue One (2016), and Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

Early life and education
Dermot Mulroney was born in Alexandria, Virginia, on Halloween in 1963. His father, Michael Mulroney, was a law professor. His mother, Ellen, was an actress in local theater. Mulroney has Irish and German roots. He is one of five children. His younger brother, Kieran Mulroney, is also an actor and writer.
As a child, Mulroney learned to play the cello. He performed in his school orchestra and acted in children's theater. He went to T. C. Williams High School and graduated in 1981. He later studied at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He graduated in 1985 with a degree in communications.
Mulroney has a scar on his upper lip. He got it from an accident when he was three years old.
Acting career
While in college, an agent from the WMA offered Mulroney a contract. He moved to Hollywood to start his acting career. His first role was in the TV movie Sin of Innocence in 1986.
Early film roles
In his early career, Mulroney acted in many serious drama films. He played a runaway teen in Where the Day Takes You (1992). He also appeared in Longtime Companion (1989), an important film about the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Mulroney became known for appearing in western films. He was in Young Guns (1988), The Last Outlaw (1993), and Bad Girls (1994). He also acted in thriller movies like Point of No Return (1993) and Copycat (1995).
Success in romantic comedies
Mulroney is also famous for his roles in romantic comedies. He starred with Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz in My Best Friend's Wedding (1997). This movie was a huge box office success.
He also played the lead male role in The Wedding Date (2005) with Debra Messing. That same year, he was part of the cast of The Family Stone with Sarah Jessica Parker.
Television and recent work
In 2003, Mulroney had a guest role on the popular TV show Friends. He played Gavin Mitchell, a character who dated Rachel for a few episodes. He later appeared in the Fox series New Girl as a love interest for Zooey Deschanel's character.
He has continued to work in both movies and television. In 2015, he starred in the horror film Insidious: Chapter 3. In 2023, he joined the Scream franchise in Scream VI. He also played the President of the United States in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Secret Invasion.
Personal life
Mulroney married actress Catherine Keener in 1990. They have a son, Clyde Keener Mulroney, who was born in 1999. The couple's marriage ended in 2007.
In 2008, he married Tharita Cesaroni. They have two daughters. Mulroney and Cesaroni's marriage ended in 2025.
Mulroney is a skilled cellist. He was part of a band called the Low and Sweet Orchestra. He has also played the cello on the soundtracks for many blockbuster movies. These include Mission: Impossible III (2006) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013). He also played a cellist on the TV show Mozart in the Jungle.
