Diffwys is a mountain located in Snowdonia, Wales. It's found near the coastal town of Barmouth and is part of a mountain range called the Rhinogydd. Standing at 750 meters (about 2,461 feet) tall, Diffwys is a notable peak in this beautiful region.

Exploring Diffwys: A Mountain in Wales

Diffwys is a mountain that offers great views and interesting features. It's a popular spot for hikers and those who love exploring the Welsh countryside. Even though it's a tall mountain, it's considered a smaller part of a nearby, even taller mountain called Y Llethr.

Where is Diffwys Located?

This mountain is in Gwynedd, a county in northwest Wales. It's part of the Rhinogydd mountain range, which is known for its rugged and wild landscape. The Rhinogydd mountains are less crowded than some other parts of Snowdonia, making them a great place for adventure.

What Makes Diffwys Special?

Diffwys has a few unique features. On its northern side, you can find something called the Caerdion Syncline. This is a geological term for a fold in the rocks, where layers of rock have been bent downwards like a U-shape. It's a cool example of how the Earth's forces have shaped the landscape over millions of years.

Diffwys is also known for being a "sub Marilyn." In the UK, a "Marilyn" is a hill or mountain that is at least 150 meters (about 492 feet) taller than any surrounding land. Diffwys just misses this status by 2 meters, meaning it's very close to being a Marilyn on its own! It's also listed as a Hewitt and a Nuttall, which are other ways to classify mountains based on their height and prominence.

Views from the Top

At the very top of Diffwys, you'll find a trig point. This is a special concrete pillar that surveyors use to help map the land. From this summit, you can enjoy amazing panoramic views.

  • To the north, you can see Y Llethr and Crib-y-rhiw.
  • Looking east, you'll spot Y Garn.
  • To the south, the famous mountain Cadair Idris stands tall.
  • And to the west, you can see Diffwys West Top, which is a slightly lower part of Diffwys itself.

These views make the climb to the top of Diffwys very rewarding!
