Dinosaur King (known in Japan as Kodai Ōja Kyōryū Kingu (古代王者恐竜キング, literally "Ancient Ruler Dinosaur King")) is a popular Japanese-Canadian series. It started as an arcade game by Sega in 2005. This game uses special cards to bring dinosaurs to life. Later, a version for the Nintendo DS was also released.

In 2008, a company called Upper Deck Company made a Dinosaur King Trading Card Game. These cards are different from the ones used in the arcade machines.

The series also became an anime TV show called Ancient Ruler Dinosaur King DKidz Adventure (古代王者恐竜キング Dキッズ・アドベンチャー, Kodai Ōja Kyōryū Kingu Dī Kizzu Adobenchā). A second season, Ancient Ruler Dinosaur King DKidz Adventure: Pterosaur Legend (古代王者恐ryū Kingu Dī Kizzu Adobenchā: Yokuryū Densetsu), came out in Japan in February 2008. The show finished its run in Japan later that year.

Game Story: Hunting Dinosaurs

The Dinosaur King game tells an exciting story about dinosaurs and time travel.

Card Game and Nintendo DS Story

The adventure begins with Dr. Spike Taylor, a dinosaur expert. He is on a mission in Africa with his son Max and his friend Rex. Max finds some old stone slabs that seem to be calling out for help from dinosaurs.

Meanwhile, an evil group called the "Alpha Gang" is causing trouble. Their leader is the sneaky Dr. Z. They have traveled back in time to capture dinosaurs and use them to take over the world. It's up to Max and Rex to stop them! They travel all over the world, trying to defeat Dr. Z and the Alpha Gang. Their main goal is to find and protect the dinosaurs. The story changes a bit as the arcade game gets new updates.

Anime Story: The D-Team's Adventures

The Dinosaur King anime series follows a group of friends who discover special dinosaur cards.

First Season: Discovering Dinosaur Power

Max Taylor is the son of Dr. Spike Taylor, a famous dinosaur scientist. One morning, Max sees a meteor fall from the sky. He rushes into the forest with his friends, Rex Owen and Zoe Drake, to see where it landed.

They find mysterious stones with symbols for lightning, wind, and grass. They also find a card with a picture of a Triceratops. When Max rubs the card on the stone, the Triceratops accidentally comes to life! They name this dinosaur Chomp.

Soon, the D-Team (Max, Rex, and Zoe) meet their enemies: the Alpha Gang. This group includes Dr. Z, Ursula, Zander, Ed, Seth, Laura, Rod, Helga, and their Alpha Droids. The Alpha Gang wants to collect all the Dinosaur Cards that were lost when their time machine broke. Rex activates a Carnotaurus card, naming it Ace. Zoe activates a Parasaurolophus card, naming it Paris.

The D-Team and the Alpha Gang often fight over new dinosaurs that appear from activated cards. In the end, Seth turns against his own team with his powerful Black Tyrannosaurus. But it is defeated. Seth tries to send Chomp back in time, but it doesn't work, and Seth goes alone. The D-Team has to say goodbye to their dinosaur friends, giving them back to Rex's real parents.

Second Season: Cosmic Stones and Space Pirates

In the second season, the Alpha Gang and the Ancients (Rex's original parents) return. While the parents are talking, they are suddenly kidnapped by Gavro, a member of the Spectral Space Pirates.

This new threat forces the Alpha Gang and the D-Team to work together! They must team up against the Space Pirates. The pirates want to find special cosmic jewels called Cosmos Stones. Seth also returns, now working with the Spectral Space Pirates. He helps them after they saved him from the time portal.

Spectre, the leader of the Space Pirates, provides the dinosaur cards they use. In one episode, Seth pretends to betray the Space Pirates to get the Cosmos Stones that the D-Team has. But later, he truly turns on his pirate comrades. In the end, even though the Spectral Space Pirates collect all seven Cosmos Stones, Seth and the Pterosaur defeat the Black Pterosaur. Rex, his parents, and the Alpha Gang then return to their own time. The Spectral Space Pirates are left floating in space.

  • Move cards: These give your dinosaurs special attacks.
  • Character cards: These might give you special abilities.
  • Super move cards: These are powerful attacks for your dinosaurs.

Media: Beyond the Game

The Dinosaur King series has been adapted into many different forms of media.

The anime TV show, Ancient Ruler Dinosaur King DKidz Adventure (古代王者恐竜キング Dキッズ・アドベンチャー, Kodai Ōja Kyōryū Kingu Dī Kizzu Adobenchā), was made by Sunrise. It first aired in Japan on TV Asahi on February 4, 2007. In 2008, an English version was shown in the US on the 4Kids TV block on Fox. Later, it moved to The CW's The CW4Kids block.
