Dogbury Hill is a tall hill in Dorset, England. It stands about 248 meters (814 feet) high. This makes it one of the highest hills in the area. Long ago, people built an ancient fort on top of it.
Where is Dogbury Hill?
Dogbury Hill is located in the beautiful countryside of Dorset. It is just north of a small village called Minterne Magna. The hill is also east of the A352 road. This road is about 14 kilometers from the town of Dorchester.
The top of the hill is covered by a group of trees called Dogbury Plantation. A small road goes over the hill and along its side. There is also a path for horses and walkers. This path runs across the northern part of the hill. Other nearby hills include Telegraph Hill and High Stoy.
Rivers and Streams Nearby
Two important streams start near Dogbury Hill. The River Cerne begins in a damp, low area. This spot is in the valley above Minterne Magna.
On the other side of Dogbury Hill, the Caundle Brook begins. It starts near a place called Clinger Farm. The Caundle Brook is the main stream that flows into the Lydden.
Dogbury Gate Pass
Dogbury Gate is a small pass through the hills. It is located at the top of the Cerne Valley. The main A352 road uses this pass. It helps people travel from the valley to the lower, flatter lands of the Blackmore Vale.
Dogbury Hill in Films
Dogbury Hill and the surrounding area are famous for a special reason. They were used as the setting for a book by Thomas Hardy. His novel, The Woodlanders, takes place here. In the book, Minterne House is called Great Hintock House.
Later, a TV film was made based on another of Hardy's books. This was the 1990s TV film of Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Parts of this movie were filmed right on Dogbury Hill.
