Telegraph Hill is a hill in Dorset, England. It stands 267 metres (876 feet) high. You can find it about 1 mile northwest of a village called Minterne Magna. It is also about 10 miles north of Dorchester. Because of its height and how much it rises above the land around it, Telegraph Hill is considered a notable hill in the British Isles.

Nearby Hills and History

Just about 600 metres away from Telegraph Hill, to the northeast, is another spot called High Stoy. There is a tall transmission mast there, which is a big tower used for sending signals.

In 1906, a writer named Sir Frederick Treves wrote about High Stoy. He said it was "the most engaging of all Dorset hills." He described it as a hill with green slopes, a rocky cliff, and lots of trees.

Across from High Stoy, you will find Dogbury Hill. This is another part of the chalk hills that make up the landscape in Dorset.

Historical Buildings

Below Telegraph Hill, to the west, is a small village called Hilfield. In Hilfield, there is a Franciscan friary. A friary is a type of monastery where monks, called friars, used to live and pray.

Telegraph Hill in Movies

The area around Minterne, Dogbury Hill, and High Stoy has been used as a setting for stories. The famous writer Thomas Hardy set his novel The Woodlanders here. In the book, Minterne House is called Great Hintock House.

Also, a TV film of Hardy's novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles was filmed on Dogbury Hill in the 1990s.

Fun Activities

Telegraph Hill is a very popular place for paragliding. Paragliding is an adventure sport where people launch themselves from a high place with a special parachute-like wing. They then glide through the air.
