Doraops zuloagai is a special type of catfish. It is the only known species in its unique group, called a genus, named Doraops. This fish belongs to the Doradidae family, which are often called thorny catfishes. They got this name because some fish in this family have spiky plates on their bodies.

About the Doraops Zuloagai

The Doraops zuloagai was first described by a scientist named Leonard Peter Schultz in 1944. This fish is known for being the only member of its genus, which makes it quite unique in the fish world. It's a fascinating creature that lives in freshwater environments.

Where They Live

These interesting catfishes come from South America. You can find them in the Lake Maracaibo basin, which is a large lake in Venezuela. They also live in several rivers that flow into this lake. These rivers include the Apón River, Santa Ana River, Catatumbo River, Escalante River, and the Rio de Los Pajaros. You can find them in both Colombia and Venezuela.

Doraops zuloagai fish prefer to live in muddy parts of rivers and lakes. They like quiet areas, often called backwaters, where the water doesn't flow too fast. This muddy environment is perfect for them to find their food and stay hidden.

What They Eat

These catfishes are not picky eaters! They have a varied diet, which means they eat many different things. Their meals often include insects that live in the water. They also enjoy eating worms, small crabs, and snails. This diet helps them get all the energy they need to grow and thrive in their muddy homes.

How Big They Get

Doraops zuloagai can grow to be quite a good size. They can reach a length of about 50.0 centimetres (19.7 in) (which is about 20 inches). This measurement is taken from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail, known as "standard length" or SL. Because of their size, they are sometimes caught by local fishermen. They are an important part of the local commercial fisheries, meaning people catch them to sell and eat.
