Dorris is in northern California. It sits in the Butte Valley. The city is located between Mount Shasta and the Oregon border. You can find it right on U.S. Route 97.

A Look at Dorris's History

The town of Dorris got its name in 1907. It was named by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The railroad honored two brothers, Presley A. and Carlos J. Dorris. These brothers raised animals in the 1860s. They later moved to a place called Dorris' Bridge. This bridge was on the Pit River. That area was later renamed Alturas, California in 1876.

The Famous Dorris Flagpole

Dorris is home to a very tall flagpole. It used to be the tallest flagpole west of the Mississippi River. It is still the tallest west of the Rocky Mountains. This flagpole stands 200 feet (61 meters) tall. It flies a huge flag that is 30 feet (9 meters) tall and 60 feet (18 meters) wide.

In 2002, a taller 300-foot pole was built in Laredo, Texas. Then, in 2014, an even taller 400-foot pole was put up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. But the Dorris flagpole is still very impressive!

Getting Around Dorris

U.S. Route 97 is a main highway that goes through Dorris. It runs from the southeast to the northwest. California State Route 161 also connects to Highway 97 just north of Dorris.

The Butte Valley Airport is a small airport near Dorris. It's about 5 miles (8 kilometers) southwest of the city center.

The Butte Valley National Grassland is a large natural area. It covers about 18,425 acres (7,456 hectares). This grassland is located between Dorris and Macdoel along Highway 97. It's a great place to explore nature.

The Butte Valley Unified School District manages the schools in Dorris. This includes the elementary, middle, and high schools.

The sports teams at Butte Valley High School are called the Bulldogs. They are part of the Evergreen League. Their teams compete in the Northern Section of the California Interscholastic Federation.
