Drake Peak is a tall mountain in the Warner Mountains range. It stands 8,399-foot (2,560 m) high in Lake County, Oregon, within the Fremont National Forest. This mountain is named after Lieutenant Colonel John M. Drake. He was a soldier who fought for the Union Army during the American Civil War.

He was an important officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He served in two different Oregon army groups.

The Fire Lookout

Near Drake Peak, on a mountain called Light Peak, there is a special building. This building is a fire lookout. It sits at 8,222-foot (2,506 m) above sea level. The lookout is a small cabin that was built in 1948. It is called an L-4 Aladdin ground cabin.

You can drive almost all the way to the lookout. From there, people can hike to the top of Drake Peak. They walk across the low area between the two mountains. Then they climb up to the very top of Drake Peak.

Plants and Animals

The environment around Drake Peak is home to many different plants and animals. On the northern side of the mountain, you will find many ponderosa pine trees. These trees make up a large forest.

On the rockier southern side, you will mostly see low sagebrush. Some areas also have quaking aspen trees and different types of fir trees. You might also spot colorful wild flowers. These include bitterroot, aster, goldenweed, and penstemon.

Many large animals live in the habitats around Drake Peak. You might see mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, and pronghorn. Other animals include black bears, bobcats, and mountain lions.

The sky above Drake Peak is also busy with birds. Common birds you might see flying are prairie falcons, golden eagles, and bald eagles.
