History of Duane

The town of Duane was officially created in 1828. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Malone. One of the first big projects in Duane was processing iron ore, which is a rock used to make iron.

The town got its name from James Duane. He was an important person who helped start the community.

The Meacham Lake Hotel used to be a very popular place for tourists. It closed in 1921. Later, the land was bought by New York State. It was turned into a campground by the Civilian Conservation Corps. This group helped people find jobs during tough economic times.

A road called New York State Route 99 was changed to County Road 26 in 1994. Gordon's Crossing is a specific spot where this old road meets County Road 26.

Two important places in Duane are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Duane Methodist Episcopal Church and the Debar Pond Lodge. This listing helps protect their history.
