Dudley Do-Right Emporium facts for kids
The Dudley Do-Right Emporium was a fun gift shop. It was named after a brave cartoon character, Dudley Do-Right, a Canadian Mountie. This shop was located in West Hollywood, California, on a famous street called the Sunset Strip.
A Look Back at the Emporium
The Dudley Do-Right Emporium was created by Jay Ward. He was a famous cartoonist who made many beloved shows. One of his most well-known creations was The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show.
The gift shop opened in 1971. It was very close to Jay Ward's cartoon studio. This studio was where shows like Rocky and Bullwinkle were made! The shop stayed open for many years, finally closing its doors in April 2005.
Inside the shop, you could find all sorts of cool things. There were toys, stuffed animals, and fun souvenirs. Everything had pictures of Jay Ward's famous characters. You could find items featuring Dudley Do-Right, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Peabody and Sherman, George of the Jungle, and many others. It was a treasure trove for fans of these classic cartoons!
The Famous Bullwinkle Statue
In front of Jay Ward's studio, there was a huge statue. It was a 15-foot (4.6 m) tall statue of Bullwinkle J. Moose. He was holding his little squirrel friend, Rocky. This statue was put up on September 24, 1961. It celebrated "The Bullwinkle Show" joining the NBC television network.
Over time, the statue started to look a bit worn out. So, in July 2013, it was taken to DreamWorks Animation for a makeover. After it was fixed up, it was shown for a short time at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills.
Since January 2015, the statue has been on display at the West Hollywood City Hall. In August 2019, the West Hollywood city council decided to give the statue a permanent home. It will now stand on a traffic island at Sunset and Holloway.
The Bullwinkle and Rocky statue was designed to spin around. It was meant to look like a spinning statue of a Las Vegas showgirl. That showgirl statue was on top of a big billboard across the street.
