A Look Back in Time

How Earl's Croome Got Its Name

Earl's Croome has a very long history. It was even mentioned in a famous old book. This book is called the Domesday Book. It was written way back in 1086. At that time, the village was known as Crumba.

The first part of the village's name, "Earl's," comes from an important person. This was the Earl of Coventry. He had a large house nearby called Earl's Croome Court. This house was right across from the village church. The church is named St. Nicholas Church of England.

Old Stories and Important People

Many years ago, around 1377 or 1378, a special gift was given. A man named Henry de Ardern received the land of Croome Adam. This land is now part of Earl's Croome. He got it from the Earl of Warwick. The payment for this land was just one red rose!

A famous cricketer named Charles Coventry is buried in the village cemetery. He played cricket for England. He was part of the first two Test matches England played against South Africa. Charles Coventry was also a soldier. He led the Worcestershire Yeomanry during the First World War. He was captured by the Turks in 1916. He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner.

Celebrating Village History

For the year 2000, which was a big celebration called the millennium, the village created something special. They made a map about the history of Earl's Croome. It was called "The Parish of Earl's Croome 2000." A book about the village's history was also produced.
