East Midlands Airport is a busy international airport in Castle Donington, England. It's located between the cities of Loughborough, Derby, and Nottingham. The airport serves the wider East Midlands area, including counties like Leicestershire and Derbyshire.

This airport started as a Royal Air Force base in 1943. It was later turned into a civilian airport in 1965. Today, it's a popular place for low-cost airlines like Jet2.com and Ryanair. These airlines fly to many places in the UK and Europe.

East Midlands Airport is also a very important place for air cargo. It's one of the busiest airports in the UK for moving goods by plane. The airport is owned by the Manchester Airports Group, which is the biggest British-owned airport operator.

The Airport's Story: From RAF Base to Travel Hub

How East Midlands Airport Began

The airport first opened in 1943 as a Royal Air Force (RAF) station. It was called RAF Castle Donington. During Second World War, it was used to train aircrews. They learned to fly planes like the Vickers Wellington and Douglas Dakota. The RAF base closed down in 1946 after the war ended.

Becoming a Civilian Airport

In 1964, local government groups bought the old RAF site. They spent a lot of money to build new runways and facilities. The airfield was renamed East Midlands Airport. It opened for passengers in April 1965. It took over from the older Derby Airport.

Over the years, the airport grew. In 1993, a company called National Express bought the airport. Later, in 2001, the Manchester Airports Group (MAG) became the owner. MAG still owns the airport today. For a short time in 2004, the airport was called Nottingham East Midlands Airport. But in 2006, its name went back to East Midlands Airport.

Airlines and Growth at EMA

Many airlines have flown from East Midlands Airport. In 2012, Jet2.com and Ryanair decided to expand their flights from the airport. Ryanair became the biggest airline there, flying about half of all passengers. East Midlands Airport is now one of Ryanair's largest bases in the UK.

The airport also became a major hub for cargo planes. Companies like DHL Aviation and UPS Airlines use it to send and receive goods. During the COVID-19 pandemic, cargo flights increased a lot. This showed how important the airport is for moving goods around.
