Early Life and High School Football
Eddie Lacy was born and grew up in Gretna, Louisiana. When Hurricane Katrina hit, his family had to leave their home. They moved to Beaumont, Texas, and later settled in Geismar, Louisiana.
Lacy went to Dutchtown High School. He was a star player on the school's football team, the Griffins. In his sophomore year, he ran for over 1,200 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. As a junior, he scored an amazing 34 touchdowns. Even though his senior year was affected by an injury, he was still recognized as one of the best high school players in Louisiana. In 2009, he decided to play college football at the University of Alabama.
College Football Career
Lacy received a scholarship to play for the University of Alabama. He played for the famous coach Nick Saban from 2009 to 2012. During his time at Alabama, Lacy and the Crimson Tide won three BCS National Championships.
Starting His College Journey (2009-2010)
When Lacy first joined the team in 2009, Alabama had many talented running backs. Because of this, he was "redshirted" for his first year. This means he practiced with the team but didn't play in any games. This allowed him to gain experience without using up a year of his college eligibility.
In 2010, Lacy became the third-string running back. In his very first college game against San Jose State, he ran for 113 yards and scored two touchdowns. For the whole 2010 season, he gained 406 rushing yards and scored six touchdowns. He averaged an impressive 7.25 yards every time he carried the ball.
Making a Name for Himself (2011)
In 2011, a top running back from Alabama left for the NFL. This moved Lacy up to the second-string running back position. People around the team thought that Lacy and the main running back, Trent Richardson, would be one of the best duos in college football history.
Lacy was known for his amazing "spin move" on the field. This move was so good that his teammates nicknamed him "Circle Button." This was a reference to the button on PlayStation video games that makes a player do a spin move.
In the 2011 season opener, Lacy had 134 total yards. He continued to play well, including a game where he rushed for 161 yards and two touchdowns against North Texas. He had a 67-yard touchdown run that was chosen as Alabama's "Play of the Week." Later in the season, he had a foot injury that caused him to miss a game. Despite the injury, Lacy finished the 2011 regular season with 631 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. He averaged 7.5 yards per carry, which was one of the best in college football.
Becoming a Star (2012)
In 2012, Eddie Lacy became Alabama's starting running back. He and his backup, T. J. Yeldon, both ran for over 1,000 yards that year. Lacy had a fantastic season. He rushed for 177 yards and three touchdowns against Missouri. In the important "Iron Bowl" game against Auburn, he gained 131 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns.
Lacy's best performances came in the championship games. He rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns in the 2012 SEC Championship Game. Then, in the 2013 BCS Championship Game against Notre Dame, he rushed for 140 yards and scored a rushing touchdown, plus a receiving touchdown. He was named the Offensive MVP of the BCS Championship game.
Lacy finished his final college season with 1,322 rushing yards, 17 rushing touchdowns, and two receiving touchdowns. After this successful year, he decided to enter the NFL Draft.
