Elijah Wayne Hughes (born March 10, 1998) is an American professional basketball player. He plays as a small forward for the Cleveland Charge in the NBA G League. Before becoming a professional, he played college basketball for the East Carolina Pirates and the Syracuse Orange.

Early Life and Basketball Start
Elijah Hughes was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. He grew up in Beacon, New York. He started playing basketball through a local youth sports group called the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). He also played for a team called the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), which is for young athletes. Elijah became well-known in his hometown for his great basketball skills.
High School Basketball Journey
After finishing eighth grade, Elijah joined the varsity team at Beacon High School. A varsity team is the main team for older, more skilled players. Even though he was tall, he mostly played as a point guard at first. After two years, he moved to John F. Kennedy Catholic High School to get more attention from college scouts.
In his junior year, Elijah helped his team win 26 games and reach the championship game of the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA). He was named the best player in his league (MVP) and made the All-State team. He once scored an amazing 42 points in a single game! After this, he decided to play college basketball for East Carolina. To make sure his grades were good enough for college, he transferred to South Kent School, a special school in South Kent, Connecticut. There, he played with other talented players who also went on to play in college.
College Basketball Career
Elijah started his college career at East Carolina. As a freshman, he played in 27 games. He scored about 7.8 points and grabbed 2.3 rebounds per game. He missed some games because of an injury. After one season, he decided to leave East Carolina.
He then transferred to Syracuse University. He had to take a year off from playing games because of college transfer rules. This is called "redshirting." During this time, he worked on getting stronger and improving his diet. When he returned to play, he became a starter for Syracuse. He was the team's second-highest scorer, averaging 13.7 points per game. He also grabbed 4.3 rebounds and made 1.2 steals per game. He was very good at shooting three-pointers.
In his junior year, Elijah was named one of the top small forwards in college basketball. He averaged 19 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. After a great season, he decided to enter the 2020 NBA draft to become a professional player.
Professional Basketball Journey
Utah Jazz (2020–2022)
In the 2020 NBA draft, Elijah was picked by the New Orleans Pelicans. He was the 39th player chosen overall. Soon after, his draft rights were traded to the Utah Jazz. This meant he would start his NBA career with the Jazz. He also played for the Salt Lake City Stars, which is a team in the NBA G League. The G League is like a development league for the NBA.
Portland Trail Blazers (2022)
In February 2022, Elijah was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers as part of a trade involving three teams.
Wisconsin Herd (2022–2024)
Later in 2022, Elijah joined the Wisconsin Herd, another team in the NBA G League. He played for them for a couple of seasons. He also signed with a team in Turkey for a short time but did not play any games there.
Cleveland Charge (2024–present)
In October 2024, Elijah signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers, an NBA team. However, he was waived a couple of days later. Soon after, he joined the Cleveland Charge, which is the G League team connected to the Cavaliers.

College
About His Family
Elijah is one of seven children in his family. His father, Wayne, works for a technology company called IBM. His mother, Penny, used to be a teacher's helper and later worked as a counselor. Elijah's older sister, Talah, also played college basketball and scored over 1,000 points in her college career.
