How Ellsinore Got Its Name

The land was later sold to Charles Hearin in 1876. He cleared the land and grew crops. In 1888, Charles Hearin allowed the Houck Railroad to build tracks across his property. He also helped plan the town and built a train station.

The town's name, Ellsinore, is believed to come from Elsinore Castle in Denmark. This famous castle is the setting for William Shakespeare's play, Hamlet. The local post office later added an extra "l," changing the spelling to "Ellsinore."
