Elveden is a small village in the West Suffolk area of Suffolk, in eastern England. In 2005, about 270 people lived there. The main road, the A11, used to go right through the village. But since 2014, a bypass helps traffic go around it, making the village quieter.

What Does Elveden Mean?
The name Elveden comes from old English words. It likely means 'elves' valley'. In the mid-12th century, an old book called Miracula sancte Wihtburge even translated the name into Latin as vallis nympharum, which means 'valley of nymphs'. For a while, in the 1600s and 1700s, people often called the village Elden.
Things to See and Do in Elveden
Elveden is home to some interesting places, including a large country estate and a popular holiday park.
Elveden Estate and Hall
Elveden Hall is the main building of the huge Elveden Estate. This large country estate is now the family home of the Guinness family, who are also known as the Earls of Iveagh. Before them, it was the home of Maharaja Duleep Singh. He was the last ruler of the Sikh Empire. His grave is in the churchyard of St Andrew and St Patrick Church. Many people from the Sikh community visit his grave to honor him.
Center Parcs Elveden Forest
A popular holiday resort called Center Parcs Elveden Forest is located near the northern edge of the village. It offers many activities and places to stay for families on holiday.
Elveden War Memorial
The Elveden War Memorial is a very tall monument built to remember those who died in the First World War. Later, names from the Second World War were added too.
Where is the Memorial?
The memorial stands where three different areas meet: Eriswell, Icklingham, and Elveden. It honors the people from all three of these places who gave their lives. The names of the fallen from each area are carved on three different sides of the monument's base.
What Does the Memorial Look Like?
It is a Corinthian column that stands 127 feet (39 m) tall. It is made of Weldon Stone and has a large urn on top made of Portland stone. Edward Cecil Guinness, who owned the Elveden Estate, asked an architect named Clyde Francis Young to design it. It took two years to build and was finished in 1921. This memorial is very important and is listed as a Grade II* historic structure.
Monuments like this, especially ones so tall, are quite rare. It is believed that its design was inspired by the 120 feet (37 m) Coke Column. That monument is located at the Holkham estate in north Norfolk.
The Elveden War Memorial is close to the A11. There is a place to pull over your car nearby if you want to visit it.
