Emanuel "Manny" Steward (July 7, 1944 – October 25, 2012) was a famous American boxer, trainer, and TV commentator for HBO Boxing. Many people called him the "Godfather of Detroit Boxing." Manny trained an amazing 41 world champion boxers! Some of his most famous fighters were Thomas Hearns, Lennox Lewis, and Wladimir Klitschko. He helped over two dozen boxers become champions. His heavyweight fighters had a great record of 34 wins, 2 losses, and 1 draw in title fights. Manny Steward is honored in both the International Boxing Hall Of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame. He was also known for helping young people in Detroit, Michigan get an education.

Manny Steward's Life and Boxing Career
Manny Steward was born in Bottom Creek, West Virginia. When he was 12, he moved to Detroit, Michigan with his mother. His father was a coal miner. In Detroit, Manny worked briefly in the car industry. Later, he went to the Brewster Recreation Center. This was where famous boxers like Joe Louis trained.
Manny started his own amateur boxing career there. He had a fantastic record of 94 wins and only 3 losses. In 1963, he won the national Golden Gloves tournament. This was in the bantamweight division.
Becoming a Top Boxing Trainer
In 1971, Manny took his half-brother, James Steward, to the Kronk Gym. This gym was a very popular place for young amateur boxers in the 1970s. Manny started coaching there part-time. He became very good at training the country's best amateur boxers. Soon, he began training professional fighters who became champions.
On March 2, 1980, Hilmer Kenty became Manny's first world champion. He won by knocking out the lightweight champ Ernesto España. Manny had huge success with Thomas Hearns. He helped Hearns become one of the most powerful punchers in boxing history. Hearns became one of Manny's most successful fighters. He fought famous boxers like Sugar Ray Leonard and Marvelous Marvin Hagler. He also knocked out Roberto Durán.
Manny was known for his friendly personality and lots of energy. He was also very generous and like a father figure to many boxers. Even though he was a boxer himself, his main passion was training others.
Manny Steward's Passing
Manny Steward passed away on October 25, 2012. He was 68 years old.

The Famous Kronk Gym
The Kronk Gym became Manny Steward's own property. He was also known for his collection of Rolls-Royce cars and mansions. He even opened another Kronk Gym in Tucson, Arizona. He also worked with the Dodge Theater in Phoenix to host boxing matches every month.
Manny had a unique training method at the gym. He would often turn up the heat to make the boxers sweat a lot. Some boxers even said the walls would sweat! This helped them get in top shape.
