There are a couple of ideas about how Enderlin got its name. Some people believe it comes from a German phrase, "End der Line," meaning "end of the line." This is because the city was once the last stop for the Soo Line Railroad in North Dakota. Another story says that the wife of a Soo Line official suggested the name, taking it from a character in a book.
On June 20, 2025, a very powerful Tornado (an EF5 tornado) passed near Enderlin. This storm caused a lot of damage to the east of town. It was one of the strongest tornadoes seen in North Dakota in many years.
