Eukey (pronounced YOO-kee) is a small country area in the Southern Downs Region of Queensland, Australia. It is located right on the border with New South Wales. In 2021, Eukey was home to about 140 people.
Where is Eukey?
Eukey is mostly made up of farms. Doctors Creek flows through the area towards the south-west. This creek eventually joins the Severn River. Another creek, McLaughin Creek, flows north. It meets Quart Pot Creek, which then goes into Storm King Dam and continues towards Stanthorpe.
The main road, Eukey Road, starts in Ballandean to the south-west. It goes through Eukey and then heads north into Storm King, leading towards Stanthorpe. Sometimes, it even snows in Eukey, which is quite special for Queensland!
Eukey's Past
Eukey wasn't always called Eukey. Its first name was Paddock Swamp. The name changed to Eukey in 1905.
A long time ago, in 1872, a man named Alexander (Sandy) Ross discovered tin in Eukey. This led to tin mining starting in the area. Sandy Ross's land was quite wet, so a company called the Paddock Creek Tin Dredging Company used special machines to dig out the tin.
A school opened in Eukey on January 25, 1897. It was first known as Paddock Swamp Provisional School. Later, in 1909, it became Paddock Swamp State School. In 1916, its name changed again to Eukey State School. The school closed its doors on April 3, 1964. It was located on the eastern side of Eukey Road, just a bit north-east of the public hall.
The Eukey Public Hall opened in 1921. It celebrated its 100th birthday on July 16, 2021, which was a big event for the community!
