Eulalio Gutiérrez Ortiz (born February 2, 1881 – died August 12, 1939) was an important general during the Mexican Revolution. He came from the state of Coahuila. He is best known for being chosen as the temporary president of Mexico.

This happened during a special meeting called the Convention of Aguascalientes. He led the country for a few months, from November 6, 1914, to January 16, 1915. This meeting was organized by revolutionaries who had successfully removed Victoriano Huerta from power.

Instead of Venustiano Carranza, Gutiérrez was chosen as president. This led to new fighting among the revolutionary groups that had once been united. Gutiérrez's government was not very strong. He found it hard to control two powerful generals, Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata.

He later moved his government's capital from Mexico City to San Luis Potosí. He eventually resigned as president and made peace with Carranza. After living in the United States for a while, he returned to Mexico. He passed away in 1939, living longer than many other key figures of the Mexican Revolution.

Who Was Eulalio Gutiérrez?

Early Life and Start in Politics

Eulalio Gutiérrez was born on a large farm called Hacienda de Santo Domingo. This farm was in the area of Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila. When he was young, he worked as a shepherd and a miner. He worked in a place called Concepción del Oro, Zacatecas. After some years, he became the mayor of that town.

For a short time, he joined the Mexican Liberal Party. Later, in 1909, he became part of the Anti-reelectionist Party. This party was led by Francisco I. Madero.

Like many people in the revolution, Gutiérrez was not a trained soldier. But he showed great skill during the fighting. After the first part of the Mexican Revolution, he went back to his home state. There, he was elected mayor of Ramos Arizpe.

When Victoriano Huerta took power in a sudden military takeover, Gutiérrez joined the fight again. He served under Pablo González Garza in the Constitutional Army of Venustiano Carranza.

During the Aguascalientes Convention, Gutiérrez was chosen as the temporary president of Mexico. This happened on November 1, 1914. He officially started his job two days later. He chose a group of people to help him lead the country.

One month after he became president, the famous revolutionary leaders Francisco Villa and Emiliano Zapata took control of Mexico City. Gutiérrez's government then moved to the capital city, which was now controlled by the Army of the Convention.

His relationship with Villa became very difficult. In January 1915, Villa even ordered his Minister of War to execute President Gutiérrez. Gutiérrez himself said in 1915 that "The Mexican landscape smells of blood."

Gutiérrez decided to leave Mexico City on January 16, 1915. He moved his government to San Luis Potosí. There, he announced that both Villa and Carranza were going against the "revolutionary spirit." He officially resigned from the presidency on July 2, 1915.

Later Years and Legacy

After leaving Mexico, Eulalio Gutiérrez went to live in the United States. He returned to Mexico in 1920. This was possible because Álvaro Obregón offered a special pardon.

In 1928, Gutiérrez was elected as a senator and then as governor of Coahuila. Later, he spoke out against Álvaro Obregón being re-elected in 1928. He also criticized the time when former president Plutarco Elías Calles had a lot of power. Gutiérrez even joined a rebellion led by José Gonzalo Escobar.

After that rebellion failed, he went into exile again. He lived in San Antonio, Texas, U.S.. He did not come back to Mexico until 1935. Four years later, he passed away in the city of Saltillo.
