First Europeans in Canada
The first Europeans to settle permanently in Canada were from France. They started living there a long time ago.
Hélène Desportes was the first European person born in New France, which was what parts of Canada were called back then. She was born in 1620.
Where Do European Canadians Come From?
In 2006, many European Canadians shared common family backgrounds. The largest group had English roots. Other big groups came from French, Scottish, Irish, and German families. Many also had Italian heritage.
Some people also said their ancestry was "Canadian." This means their families have been in Canada for many generations. Because of this, the numbers for English and French ancestry might be even higher.
Beliefs and Languages
Most European Canadians are Christian. This means they follow the Christian faith.
A smaller number of European Canadians follow other beliefs. Some are Jewish, while others are Deists, Agnostics, or Atheists. There are also some Muslims, Bahá'ís, Paganists/Wiccas, and Unitarian Universalists.
Most European Canadians speak either English or French. These are the two official languages of Canada.
