Eusebia Palomino Yenes (born December 15, 1899 – died February 10, 1935) was a Spanish Catholic nun. She was a member of the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco. Eusebia worked to help her family when she was young. She later joined the Salesian Sisters. She was known for her strong devotion to Jesus Christ and the Way of the Cross.

Her journey to becoming a saint began in 1981. She was first called a Servant of God. Later, Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable in 1996. This meant she lived a life of great goodness. A miracle was then approved, which was believed to have happened because of her prayers. Pope John Paul II officially declared her "Blessed" on April 25, 2004, in Saint Peter's Square.

Eusebia's Early Life

Eusebia Palomino Yenes was born in Cantalpino, Spain, on December 15, 1899. She was the third of four children. Her parents were Agustin Palomino and Juana Yenes de Villaflores. Her father worked as a farmhand. In winter, when there was no work, he would beg for food. Eusebia often went with him on these trips around 1909. He taught her about her faith during these times.

Eusebia received her First Communion when she was eight years old. She called this her first special meeting with Jesus Christ. In 1906, she started school. But she had to leave school to help her parents.

Joining the Salesian Sisters

Eusebia first worked as a house helper for a wealthy family. In 1911, she worked in an orphanage with her older sister, Dolores. Once a week, she visited a school chapel run by the Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco. She got to know the sisters there.

The sisters asked her to work for them. So, Eusebia became a maid and cook for the religious community. She also cleaned the school and collected firewood. The students at the school admired her. They often came to her for her wise advice.

Eusebia secretly wanted to become a nun. But she was afraid to ask. She thought they might say no because she was poor and had little education. A visiting leader of the order spoke with her. She told Eusebia that she would be accepted soon.

Eusebia was accepted on January 31, 1921. She received the Salesian Sisters' religious clothing on May 5, 1922. She began her training as a nun in Barcelona on August 5, 1922. She made her first promises as a nun in August 1924. After this, she moved to the Salesian house in Valverde del Camino.

When she first arrived, some students made fun of her looks. But Eusebia did not let this bother her. She continued her daily duties. Soon, the students saw how spiritual and devout she was. They loved listening to her stories about saints. She also told them stories about the life of Giovanni Bosco, the founder of the Salesian order. Eusebia made her final promises as a nun in 1930. Many Priests and other religious people came to her for advice. She loved a special devotion called 'Marian servitude'. She also encouraged others to pray about the wounds of Jesus Christ and the Way of the Cross.

Later Life and Death

In the 1930s, there was a lot of anti-religious feeling in Spain. Eusebia offered herself to God. She prayed for the safety of her country. In August 1932, she became very ill. Doctors could not figure out what was wrong. Her limbs would often become stiff, and her mild asthma got worse. This caused her much suffering. On October 4, 1934, she looked very pale. She told her sisters to pray to God to protect Catalonia.

Eusebia died in 1935. Not long before her death, she had predicted that the anti-religious feelings would lead to a conflict. This sadly happened soon after, with the start of the Spanish Civil War.

Becoming Blessed

The process to declare Eusebia a saint began on December 15, 1981. The Church officially called her a Servant of God. A local investigation into her life took place from 1982 to 1984. This information was then sent to Rome.

In 1996, Church officials agreed that she lived a life of great goodness. On December 17, 1996, Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable. This is an important step towards sainthood.

For someone to be declared "Blessed," a miracle must be approved. A miracle believed to be through Eusebia's prayers was investigated. Doctors and theologians studied it. They approved it on December 20, 2003. Pope John Paul II then approved this miracle. He officially declared Eusebia Palomino Yenes "Blessed" on April 25, 2004. This special ceremony took place in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican City.
