Evanna Patricia Lynch (born 16 August 1991) is an Irish actress and activist. She is famous for playing Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies.
Evanna started her film career in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007). She continued playing Luna in all the later Harry Potter films. She also appeared in movies like G.B.F. (2013) and My Name Is Emily (2015). Evanna has also performed in plays, including Houdini and Disco Pigs. In 2018, she competed on Dancing with the Stars and finished in third place.
Beyond acting, Evanna is a strong supporter of veganism and animal rights. She works with many non-profit groups. She also started a vegan podcast and a cruelty-free makeup brand called Kinder Beauty Box.

Evanna's Early Life and School

Evanna Patricia Lynch was born on 16 August 1991. She grew up in Termonfeckin, County Louth, on the east coast of Ireland. She has two older sisters and a younger brother. Her uncle, Declan Kiberd, is a well-known expert in Irish literature. Evanna was raised in the Catholic faith.
Evanna first read the Harry Potter books when she was eight. She became a huge fan. She even wrote fan fiction and sent letters to the author, J. K. Rowling. Evanna went to Cartown National School until 2004. Then she moved to Our Lady's College in Drogheda. Her father was the deputy principal there. In 2008, she studied drama at a special summer school for talented teenagers. While filming Harry Potter, Evanna had tutors for at least three hours every day.
When she was eleven, Evanna faced some health challenges. She found that the Harry Potter books were the only thing that could truly help her feel better. She often wrote to J. K. Rowling during this time. Rowling wrote back with "incredible, wise letters" that made Evanna "want to live again." When the fifth book, Order of the Phoenix, came out, Evanna was able to leave the hospital for an hour to get a signed copy.
Evanna's Acting Career
Starting with Harry Potter (2006–2011)
In January 2006, Evanna auditioned for the role of Luna Lovegood. This was for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She was 14 years old. She was chosen from 15,000 other girls. Producers were very impressed with how much she understood the character. Even J. K. Rowling thought Evanna was perfect for the role. Before Harry Potter, Evanna had only acted in school plays. While filming, she even helped design some of Luna's unique accessories.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was Evanna's first movie. It came out in 2007 and was a big success. Critics especially praised Evanna's performance. The New York Times called her acting "spellbinding." She also voiced Luna in the video game for the film. Evanna played Luna again in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009). This film was also very popular. Critics continued to praise her, with one calling her the best Irish actress of 2009. She received nominations for awards and voiced Luna in this film's video game too.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 was released in 2010. Evanna's role was smaller, but critics still enjoyed her performance. She voiced Luna in the video game for this film as well. Evanna played Luna for the last time in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. This movie was a huge hit and became one of the highest-grossing films ever. Critics loved her performance, saying she continued to be "all-that-and-a-radish-earring." She also voiced Luna in the video game for this final film. In 2012, she joined a script reading for a Harry Potter parody musical called A Very Potter Senior Year.
J. K. Rowling, the author, once said that Evanna was one of the "Big Seven" main cast members. Rowling has also said that Evanna had the most influence on how Luna was written in the later books. She even heard Evanna's voice when writing Luna.
More Films and Stage Roles (2012–Present)
After Harry Potter, Evanna appeared in the TV series Sinbad in 2012. She was cast in an indie comedy called G.B.F. (2013), which received good reviews.
In 2013, Evanna starred in the play Houdini. She played Bess Houdini, the wife of the famous magician. The play toured the UK. In 2015, she appeared with her Harry Potter co-stars, James and Oliver Phelps, in the TV film Danny and the Human Zoo. Evanna also starred in the Irish drama My Name Is Emily (2015). Her performance was highly praised, and she was nominated for Best Actress at the Irish Film and Drama Awards.
From 2017 to 2018, Evanna starred in a play called Disco Pigs in London and New York. In 2018, she competed on Dancing with the Stars and finished in third place. In 2019, she appeared in the play The Omission of the Family Coleman. She also lent her voice to Nickelodeon shows like Middle School Moguls (2019) and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2020). Evanna narrated a story from the The Tales of Beedle the Bard audiobook in 2020. This was to help J. K. Rowling's charity, Lumos.
In 2021, Evanna attended Comic Con events in Stuttgart and Brussels. She also co-hosted a podcast about the TV series Normal People. In 2022, Evanna started a new podcast called Just Beings. She will voice the main character in the animated film My Freaky Family (2024). She is also set to play Lucia Joyce in the film James and Lucia.
Other Activities
Helping Others (Charity Work)
Evanna is involved in many charity projects. She has worked with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Ireland. She is also on the Board of Advisors for the Harry Potter Alliance (HPA). With the HPA, she has supported various causes and written about body image.
Evanna is an ambassador for J. K. Rowling's charity, Lumos. In 2016, she traveled to Haiti with fellow Harry Potter actor Bonnie Wright. They learned about children living in orphanages and met children who were reunited with their families. Evanna believes that "children can't be children" without families and love.
In 2018, Evanna wrote an essay for the book Feminists Don't Wear Pink and Other Lies. The money from this book went to the United Nations charity Girl Up.
Speaking Up for Animals (Activism and Veganism)
Evanna became a vegetarian at age 11. In 2015, she became a vegan because she cares deeply about animals. She says her activism is a way to "give back and a way to right the world."
In 2015, Evanna was the first person to sign a petition against live animal export. She has joined many animal rights protests and campaigns. In 2018, she traveled to India to see how Asian elephants are treated. She also joined an organization called Save the Asian Elephants. They asked for a ban on advertising unethical elephant holidays.
In 2017, Evanna narrated a short film called iAnimal about the dairy industry. In 2018, she narrated another short film against the dog and cat meat trade in Asia. When J.K. Rowling shared her thoughts on social media in 2020, many Harry Potter actors responded. Evanna tweeted that it's "irresponsible to discuss such a delicate topic" on social media. She also said that as a friend, she couldn't forget how kind Rowling is. Evanna later deleted her Twitter account. In a 2023 interview, Evanna shared her compassion for all sides of the discussion. Evanna's Personal Life
Evanna lives in London, England. She has not lived in Ireland since she was 18. She used to live in Los Angeles for five years. In 2007, Evanna started dating her Harry Potter co-star and ChickPeeps co-host Robbie Jarvis. They made their relationship public in 2015 but broke up the next year. They are still good friends. She later dated singer-songwriter AnDel in 2017. As of 2021, she was reportedly dating a French man she met in London. In 2025, she confirmed she is in a relationship with a man named Den.
In 2014, she talked about her Catholic upbringing. She stopped going to Mass because she disagreed with some rules. She doesn't like anything that makes people feel bad about themselves.
Evanna works to help young girls feel good about themselves and their bodies. She wrote an essay called "Why the Body Bind is My Nightmare." In it, she described her struggles with her appearance. She explained how the Harry Potter series helped her overcome these challenges.
