The word Führer comes from the German language. It means "leader." This word is most often used to talk about Adolf Hitler. Hitler was the powerful leader of Germany during the time of the Third Reich. He was a dictator, meaning he had complete control. Hitler used the title Führer and Reichskanzler of the Third Reich to show his power.

Leaders with Similar Titles
Many other important people throughout history have been called "leader" or a similar title. These titles often showed their great power over a country or group.
Ancient and Early Modern Leaders
- Julius Caesar was a very strong leader of the Roman Republic. He was called Dictator.
- Oliver Cromwell was the Lord Protector of a large area. This included England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. This was called the Commonwealth.
Modern Dictators and Presidents
- Benito Mussolini was a dictator in Italy. He was known as Il Duce, which also means "the leader."
- Joseph Stalin led the Soviet Union. His official title was General Secretary. But everyone knew he was the true and powerful leader.
- Francisco Franco was the leader of Spain. He was called President.
- Ion Antonescu and Nicolae Ceauşescu were leaders of Romania. Their title was Conducător.
- Fidel Castro was the former President of Cuba. He was often called Máximo Líder, meaning "Maximum Leader."
- Kim Il-sung founded North Korea. He was called Supreme Leader (위대한 수령).
- Kim Jong-il, Kim Il-sung's son, also became a leader. He was first called Beloved Leader (친애하는 지도자). Later, he was also called Supreme Leader.
- Ante Pavelić was a dictator of a state called "Independent State of Croatia." This state was controlled by Germany. His title was Poglavnik.
- Ferenc Szálasi was a dictator in Hungary during 1944 and 1945. He was called Leader of the nation (Hungarian: Nemzetvezető).
- Nursultan Nasarbajew was the President of Kazakhstan for many years. Since 2010, he has the title Leader of the nation (Ұлт Лидері/Ult Lideri).
- Muammar al-Gaddafi led Libya for a long time. He was known as Revolutionary leader until 2011.
