China FAW Group Corp., Ltd. (also known as First Automobile Works) is a huge car company in China. It is owned by the Chinese government. The company's main office is in Changchun, Jilin.

FAW Group started on July 15, 1953. It is one of the "Big Four" state-owned car makers in China. The other big companies are SAIC Motor, Dongfeng Motor Corporation, and Changan Automobile.

FAW makes many types of vehicles. These include cars, buses, and trucks. They also make parts for cars. You might know their own brands like Hongqi and Bestune. They also work with foreign companies like Toyota and Volkswagen to make cars.

FAW was the first car maker in China. In 1958, they made China's first passenger car, the Hongqi.

How FAW Started

FAW Group began building its first factory in 1953. This was during China's first five-year plan for development. In 1956, they made their first product: the Jiefang CA-10 truck. This truck was based on a Soviet design.

In the early years, Soviet Russia helped FAW a lot. They gave technical support, tools, and machines. Many Chinese workers even went to a truck factory in the Soviet Union to learn how to build trucks. The Soviets also helped choose Changchun as the location for FAW's first factory.

From Trucks to Cars

At first, First Automobile Works only made trucks. But in 1958, they started making passenger cars. These cars were the Hongqi luxury sedans. They were the first cars made in China. These special cars were mostly for important government officials. Their design stayed almost the same for 30 years!

The FAW logo, which looks like a "winged 1," was created in 1964. It comes from the Chinese words for "one" and "automotive." It looks like a hawk spreading its wings.

In 1992, the company changed its name from "First Automobile Works" to "FAW Group Corporation."

Working with Other Car Companies

FAW was one of the first Chinese car companies to work with foreign partners. In 1990, they started a joint venture with Volkswagen. This means they worked together to make cars. Later, FAW also teamed up with Toyota in 2002 and General Motors in 2009. These partnerships helped FAW grow and make more types of cars.

FAW has become one of the biggest car makers in China. In 2011, they produced 2.6 million vehicles.
