History of FAW Group
First Automotive Works started building its first factory in 1953. This was during China's first five-year plan. The company made its first product, the Jiefang CA-10 truck, in 1956. This truck was based on a Soviet design.
The Soviet Union helped FAW a lot in the early years. They gave technical support, tools, and machines. Before the factory opened, 39 Chinese FAW workers went to a truck factory in the Soviet Union to learn how to make trucks. The Soviet Union even helped choose Changchun as the location for the first FAW factory.
FAW first made only trucks. But in 1958, it started making passenger cars. These were the Hongqi luxury sedans. They were the first cars made in China. These cars were mostly for important government officials. Their design stayed almost the same for 30 years.
The FAW logo, which looks like a winged "1," was introduced in 1964. It comes from the Chinese words for "one" and "automotive." It looks like a hawk spreading its wings.
In 1992, First Automotive Works changed its name to FAW Group Corporation. FAW was one of the first Chinese car makers to work with Western companies. In 1990, it started a big partnership with Volkswagen.
After Volkswagen, other foreign companies partnered with FAW. In 2002, FAW bought half of Tianjin Automotive Xiali. This led to a partnership with Toyota. FAW also started a joint venture with General Motors in 2009. It has worked with other foreign companies too.
In 2008, FAW made over 1.5 million vehicles. By 2009, it was the second largest car maker in China. In 2010, it sold 2.56 million vehicles, making it the third most productive car maker in China. In 2011, it produced 2.6 million vehicles. In 2012, production was 2.3 million vehicles.
In July 2021, FAW gave 49% of its shares in FAW Haima to Hainan Development Holdings. As of 2024, many of FAW's older car brands have been stopped. Now, only Hongqi and Bestune are its main passenger car brands.
Working with Leapmotor
In March 2025, FAW Group and Leapmotor agreed to work together. They plan to develop new passenger cars and car parts. In May 2025, at the Auto Shanghai show, Leapmotor's chairman said they would make a new car for the Hongqi brand. This car is for selling outside of China. Production of this new Hongqi model is set to begin in the second half of 2026. It will be built at Leapmotor's factory in Hangzhou. The new Hongqi car will use the same base as the Leapmotor B10. It will come as an electric car or with a range-extender engine.
