Where the False Smooth Snake Lives
The false smooth snake lives in many countries around the Mediterranean Sea. You can find it in places like Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Italy, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian Territories, Portugal, Spain, and Tunisia.
What the False Smooth Snake Looks Like
This snake is quite small. It usually grows to about 55 centimeters (about 21 inches) long, including its tail. Its scales are smooth and arranged in rows.
The snake's back is often tan or gray. It might have small brown spots or darker and lighter stripes. Its belly can be yellow or even coral-red. Sometimes, the belly has black spots that might join together.
A cool feature is its blackish collar, which can reach the top of its head. It also has a dark line from its nose to the corner of its mouth, passing under or through its eye. The snake's eye is small, and its pupil looks oval in bright light. Its snout (nose area) is flat.
Where the False Smooth Snake Calls Home
The false smooth snake lives in many different places. It likes temperate forests and areas with shrubs. It can also be found near freshwater springs and rocky spots.
Sometimes, you might see it in sandy areas, on farms, or even in gardens and urban areas. This snake is good at adapting to different environments!
How the False Smooth Snake Behaves
This snake's daily routine can change depending on where it lives. In some areas, it is active mostly at night (nocturnal). But in the Balearic Islands, it is more active during the day (diurnal).
What the False Smooth Snake Eats
The false smooth snake is a hunter. It mainly eats small lizards, like geckos and other types of lizards. Sometimes, it also eats small mammals or baby birds found in nests.
Reproduction and Life Cycle
Female false smooth snakes might not breed every year. They usually lay two to six eggs at a time. They choose a damp spot for their eggs, like under a stone, buried in the soil, or hidden in thick plants.
The eggs hatch in about eight weeks. The baby snakes are tiny, measuring about 12 to 16 centimeters (about 5 to 6 inches) long when they are born.
Is the False Smooth Snake Dangerous?
The false smooth snake has a mild venom. It delivers this venom using special grooved teeth in its upper jaw. While this venom works well on lizards, it is not harmful to humans. This is because the snake is small and its venom is not strong enough to hurt people.
Conservation Status
The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) has listed the false smooth snake as being of "Least Concern". This is good news! It means the snake is found in many places and has a large population. It can also handle some changes to its habitat. Its numbers are not dropping quickly enough to be worried about it becoming endangered.
