Fauntleroy is a cool neighborhood located in the southwest corner of Seattle, Washington. It's part of West Seattle and sits right on Puget Sound's Fauntleroy Cove. A small stream called Fauntleroy Creek flows into this cove from Fauntleroy Park.

Looking west from Fauntleroy, you can see Vashon Island, Blake Island, and the Kitsap Peninsula. On clear, sunny days, many spots in the neighborhood offer amazing views of the Olympic Mountains, which are about 40 miles (64 km) away.

Fauntleroy is next to Lincoln Park to the north. To the east is Fauntlee Hills, and to the south is Arbor Heights. Inside Fauntleroy, there's an area called Endolyne. This name comes from the "end of the line" for the old streetcar route that went to Fauntleroy Park in the early 1900s.

The neighborhood is also home to the Fauntleroy Washington State Ferries terminal. From here, you can catch a ferry to Vashon Island and Southworth. Fauntleroy Way connects to the West Seattle Bridge, which crosses the Duwamish Waterway (Duwamish River).

A Look Back in Time

The name Fauntleroy comes from the cove itself. In 1857, Lieutenant George Davidson of the U.S. Coast Survey named it. He chose the name to honor the family of his fiancée, Ellinor Fauntleroy, who was from Indiana. The development of the Fauntleroy neighborhood officially began in 1905.

Community Spirit

At the heart of the Fauntleroy neighborhood are several important community places. These include Fauntleroy Church (United Church of Christ), the Fauntleroy YMCA, and The Hall at Fauntleroy. The Hall used to be the Fauntleroy School, but now it's home to the Fauntleroy Children's Center (childcare). It also has a caterer, an auditorium for rent, meeting rooms, and other businesses.

There's also an all-volunteer group called the Fauntleroy Community Association. This Community organization was started in the early 1980s. It brings neighbors together to work on local issues. These issues include keeping the Environmental quality good, managing Traffic, and finding solutions for Parking.
