The Story of Felix Cat Food
Felix Catfood Ltd started making dry cat biscuits a long time ago, even before the Second World War. Their first factory was in a town called Biggleswade in England.
How Felix Grew
In 1970, a company called Quaker Oats Company bought Felix. They wanted to grow their pet food business in the UK. Production moved to a new factory in Southall, London. That's when Felix started making new products, including wet food in tins.
Becoming a Top Brand
In the 1980s, Felix was not selling very well. Big shops were thinking about stopping selling it because other brands, like Whiskas, were much more popular. Whiskas had over 50% of the cat food market, while Felix only had 6%.
To fix this, Felix was relaunched in 1989. They introduced new products and their famous black-and-white cat mascot, Felix. After a big advertising campaign in newspapers and on TV, Felix became much more popular across the UK and Europe. By 1996, Felix even became the top cat food brand in the UK for a while, selling more than Whiskas!
New Owners for Felix
Quaker Oats sold Felix to another company called Spillers in 1995. Then, in 1997, Nestlé bought Felix. Today, Felix is still part of Nestlé Purina PetCare.
A Famous Voice for Felix
In 2023, the famous singer Robbie Williams became the new voice for Felix cat food. He sang a song called 'It's Great to be a Cat' for their new TV adverts.
Where You Can Find Felix
Felix cat food is sold in many countries around the world. These include Australia, Russia, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Slovenia, Ukraine, the Republic of Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and Chile.
In some countries, like France, Italy, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark, it's sold under the name Pussi. In Finland, it's called Latz. Felix also sells cat milk.
Since 2018, Felix has mainly produced its wet food for the UK market in plastic pouches. This is because fewer people were buying the food in tins.
