Exploring Felton's Landscape
Felton is a beautiful area with natural features. Hodgson Creek flows through the area and forms part of its southwestern border.
There's also a smaller area within Felton called Felton East.
Felton has two mountains:
- Mount Perkins: This mountain is about 580 meters (1,903 feet) tall. It was named after a local politician, Patrick Perkins. A politician is someone who works in government to make decisions for the community.
- Mount Rolleston: This mountain is about 604 meters (1,982 feet) tall. It was named after Christopher Rolleston, who was in charge of Crown Lands for the Darling Downs long ago.
A Glimpse into Felton's Past
The name Felton comes from a large piece of land used for raising animals, called a pastoral run. Charles Mallard, who owned this land, named it after his hometown in England.
In 1877, about 7,800 acres of the Felton pastoral run were made available for people to buy and settle on. This was a way to encourage more people to move to the area.
Over the years, several schools opened and later closed in the Felton area:
- Mount Kent State School was open from 1883 to 1959.
- Nunkulla State School was open from 1912 to 1959.
- East Felton State School was open from 1921 to 1967.
The Felton Hall, a community building, was first built in 1931. In 2015, a new hall was created by moving a building from a school in Harristown, Toowoomba, to Felton.
