A Look at Sinah's History
People have lived in the Sinah area for a long time. By the 1400s, monks had settled in Sinah Warren. Later, in the 1800s, fishermen built huts in the sheltered area of The Kench. An inn, the Norfolk Inn, was built to serve these fishermen.
Around 1900, a road was built towards the ferry point. This road helped develop the Hayling Island Ferry, a golf course, a health farm, and even supported efforts during the Second World War. Today, many parts of Sinah are protected as nature reserves.
Exploring the Ferry Point
The Ferry Point is the very western tip of Hayling Island in Hampshire, England. From here, you can see the fast-moving tides of Langstone Harbour entrance. This spot used to be called Sinah Point.
The water currents here can be very strong and dangerous. It's important to be careful near the water.
At the Ferry Point, you'll find a few houses and a pub called the "Ferry Boat Inn." If you walk straight past the pub, you'll reach a slipway that goes directly into the water. If you turn left, you can walk past the Langstone Harbour Master's office to the jetty. This is where the passenger ferry takes people to Eastney in Portsmouth.
The Hayling Island golf course is right behind the Ferry Point, and a small bay called The Kench is just to the east. A single lane road leads east towards the rest of the island. From here, you can enjoy great views north towards Portsdown Hill and Butser Hill.
Discovering Sinah Beach
Sinah Beach starts near the Ferry Boat Inn at the western end of Hayling Island. It's a lovely spot to enjoy the coast.
What is Sinah Warren?
Sinah Warren is an area north of Ferry Road, where a popular Holiday Camp is located today. Back in the 1400s, monks lived here. People jokingly say it was the first "health farm" on the site!
In the 1500s, the monks left, and the land was sold to the Duke of Norfolk. Later, in 1825, it might have been sold to William Padwick. In the 1930s, August Arbuthnot bought Sinah Warren. He built the Sinah Warren Residence and planted many different kinds of plants and trees from his travels around the world. He also started one of the first large-scale farms, first raising Angora Rabbits and then Poultry (chickens and other birds) to help provide food during the Second World War.
After the war, the Royal Navy used Sinah Warren until the 1950s. Then, it was sold and developed into the holiday camp you see today.
Exploring Sinah Common
Sinah Common is the area south of Ferry Road, which includes the golf course. This area is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, meaning it's protected because of its special wildlife or geology.
The water in front of the golf clubhouse is often called Sinah Lake. There's also another area within Langstone Harbour that forms a lake at low tide, also known as Sinah Lake. You can still find well-preserved structures from World War II here, like gun batteries and pillboxes (small concrete bunkers).
Understanding The Kench
The Kench is a small, natural inlet located north of Ferry Road. There were once plans to turn this area into a big port or marina, but these ideas didn't happen. Now, The Kench is a protected nature reserve, and a few houseboats are allowed to be there.
Places to See and Visit
The Ferry Boat Inn
This inn has had many names over the years, including the "Norfolk Inn" and "Duke of Norfolk." The first Norfolk Inn was built before 1776, east of The Kench. The building that replaced it at the ferry point was actually built using parts from a shipwreck, the HMS Impregnable, which sank in 1799!
The current building was originally a boathouse. The Spraggs family owned and ran the inn from at least 1900 until after the mid-1900s. They were the ones who changed its name to "Ferry" and also operated the Hayling Ferry, so the two businesses worked well together. Today, the inn is owned by the Stonegate Pub Company.

Getting Around Sinah
The Hayling Ferry connects Hayling Island to Portsmouth from the Ferry Point. This ferry service has been running for over 200 years! In March 2015, the service stopped for a while due to safety issues. However, it started again in August 2016 after people raised money to help, including a £5,000 donation from Richard Branson.
Bus services to the ferry stopped in 2004. People have tried to bring them back many times. In 2018, Havant Borough Council provided £20,000 to try a new bus service for six months. This bus, number 149, would go around Hayling Island and then connect to the ferry. On the Portsmouth side, another bus route was extended closer to the ferry's landing spot.
